Maud Earl (English 1864-1943) Two Pointers - Photogravure on paper signed lower left. published 1905 Berlin Photographic Company Berlin/London - 13 x 21" 23 x 29" as framed. Maud's profession was the continuation of a family tradition. Her father George, her uncle Thomas Earl and her half brother Percy Earl were also animal painters of note. George Earl, an avid sportsman and noted sporting painter, was his daughterâs first teacher and ensured she studied the anatomy of her subjects, drawing dog, horse and human skeletons to improve her skill. She later said that her fatherâs instruction had given her ability that set her apart from other dog painters. After her father's tutelage Maud went on to study at Royal Female School of Art, which was later incorporated into the Central School of Art. Starting in 1884,[2] Earl exhibited around twelve works at the Royal Academy starting with a stag painting Early Morning in 1884. She also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists and at the Paris Salon. In 1897 Earl had an exhibition in which she showed paintings of 48 different breeds of dog. Earl became famous during the Victorian Era, a time when women were not expected to make their living at painting. Nevertheless, she developed a select clientele, that included members of the British royal family, such as Queen Victoria and Queen Alexandra.

Born into a family of sporting artists, she was the daughter of George Earl, celebrated artist, was Maud’s first teacher, insisting she study anatomy through detailed drawings, a discipline she credited with setting her apart from other dog painters. She later studied at the Royal Female School of Art, which became part of the Central School of Art. Her work gained considerable popularity in Britain and the United States, where she exhibited widely and secured prestigious commissions from prominent collectors and breeders. Queen Victoria, a passionate dog lover, commissioned Earl to paint her favourite Collie, and other members of the royal family, including Queen Alexandra, Francis Redmond of Totteridge fame, and the Duchess of Newcastle became her patrons. These striking compositions present a solitary dog standing in a snow-covered landscape, the first, showing its head lifted in a moment of alert attention, possibly mid-call. The animal is rendered with exceptional sensitivity, the soft handling of the thick, pale coat contrasting subtly with touches of warmer tones around the ears and muzzle. Earl’s precise yet fluid brushwork conveys both the texture of the fur and the physical presence of the animal with notable realism. Set against sweeping, windswept backdrops, the scenes are dominated by cool, muted palette of greys and icy blues. The rising slope behind the figure and the suggestion of drifting snow create a strong sense of movement and atmosphere, evoking the chill and stillness of winter. The sparse foreground, with only minimal vegetation breaking through the snow, further emphasizes the isolation of the subject. Maud Alice Earl (1863-1943) Portrait of Mildred Hetherington (1874-1943) mounted side-saddle signed and dated '94 lower right oil on canvas 62 x 75cm Provenance: By descent from the sitter to her grandson, Heydon Grange, Norfolk The sitter was the daughter of John Hetherington of Cricklewood, Middlesex, and married in 1900 Hanslip Long of Balsham (1869-1943). The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which is unlined and has an artist supplier stamp for Winsor and Newton on the reverse. The canvas tension is good and the picture is in plane. The paint layers are in a good condition overall. The varnish is slightly yellowed and matte but even. Around the head of the sitter and horse the paint appears a little glossier, this appears to be reworking by the artist to emphasise these features against the dark background. There is a light layer of surface dust present and a few accretions. Framed 89 x 92cm

The tacking edges appear slightly fragile but overall the canvas tension is good. There is a tear in the upper half of the picture with an area of paint loss surrounding it. Stretcher bar marks are evident in the paint layer following the wooden stretcher behind. The paint layers have developed a network of age cracks, some of are slightly raised and lifting. There are a few small, scattered areas of loss present. Apart from these issues, the paint layer is a good, original condition. The varnish has yellowed and appears dull with some dark, scattered spots around. There is a light layer of surface dirt present. Framed 105 x 95cm

Scaife Lot note: Working in the tradition of Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, Maud Earl gained significant recognition for her sentimental portraits of dogs. Her expertise earned her commissions from Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, and many other prominent figures of the English aristocracy and high society. She was equally known for her nearly encyclopedic knowledge in depicting all varieties of breeds. She believed that unless a painter had this knowledge, it would be wholly impossible for them to render individuality. The present painting, Four Friends, can thus be seen as more than a portrait of beloved pets - it is also a declaration of the artist's mastery. This arrangement of dogs not only emphasizes their familial status, but also emphasizes the dramatic differences in size, shape, and coat of each dog. Earl was born in London to a family of animal painters and so this vocation most certainly suited her. She exhibited her work at the Royal Academy and at the Paris Salon before emigrating to the United States in 1916.
