(1821 Stuttgart - 1885 München) Weiler in Holland Blick auf eine baumbestandene Niederungs-Landschaft mit Wassermühle, belebt durch eine reiche Staffage aus einer jungen Melkerin mit Joch, Kühen und einer Stute mit Fohlen, rechts im Hintergrund eine Windmühle. 1877 entstanden, gehört dieses Gemälde zu Eberts reifem, späten Oeuvre, das den Höhepunkt seines künstlerischen Schaffens darstellt. Die Landschaft basiert auf den Erlebnissen zweier Studienreisen Eberts nach Holland 1866 und 1877. Zugleich spiegelt das Bild den prägenden Einfluss Charles-François Daubignys wider, der mit seiner Pleinair-Malerei, Malweise und dem pastosen Farbauftrag auch die späteren Impressionisten beeinflusste. 1867 besuchte Ebert die Pariser Weltausstellung, wo er die Kunst Daubignys und der Schule von Barbizon ausgiebig studieren konnte. Date: Description: After studying at the classically-influenced art academy in Stuttgart, Ebert moved to Munich in 1846 to join the circle of landscape painters around Eduard Schleich. In 1851, he travelled to Paris with Schleich and his artist friend Carl Spitzweg. His stay there and his encounter with the Barbizon group of artists was to fundamentally change his view of landscape painting. Schleich's painting was influenced by his great teachers and role models Christian Morgenstern and Carl Rottmann, whose idealised interpretation of nature was strongly influenced by Romanticism. Some of his landscapes seem to freeze under the atmospheric lighting conditions and the trimmed natural components. In his small sketch, Ebert frees himself completely from this conception of the landscape. He discovers the charm of the inconspicuous motif and establishes an almost intimate relationship with it. It is a landscape near Pähl between the Ammersee and Lake Starnberg, a frequent excursion destination for Munich artists. But it could be anywhere, Ebert does not give a creative definition of the place here. The lines are free, the light is not assigned a fixed place. Nature is in motion, it is alive. It is his song of praise to open-air painting, which will soon revolutionise the classical system of academy training. CARL EBERT (Stuttgart, 1821 - Munich, 1885). "Landscape" 1866. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. It has craquelure on the paint. It has a patch on the back. Measurements: 130 x 109 cm; 141 x 119 cm (frame). Wooded landscapes were the favourite subject of this German painter. In this forest clearing, the trees with their iron roots intertwine their crowns to form dense canopies. Through the leaves, sunlight filters and frolics through the branches, drawing out rich shades of emerald greens, ochres, siennas and tans. A fragile fawn is cautious and wary of a potential predator. Carl Ebert was a German landscape painter. He studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart under Gottlob Friedrich Steinkopf and Johann Friedrich Dieterich. In 1846 he moved to Munich, where he became a private pupil of Eduard Schleich, and often visited the Alte Pinakothek to study the works of the Old Masters. Together with Friedrich Salzer and Richard Zimmermann, he visited the artists' colonies of Polling and Eberfing. Subsequently he devoted himself entirely to landscape painting, particularly forest scenes. He also visited the Exposition Universelle (1855), where he was first influenced by the Barbizon school. Later he accompanied Schleich and Carl Morgenstern on study trips to France, Belgium and the Netherlands. He also travelled to Italy in 1857 and 1872 and spent several months in Bosnia in 1881. He received a state pension from King Ludwig II of Bavaria and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Crown by King Karl I of Württemberg.

Later he accompanied Schleich and Carl Morgenstern on study trips to France, Belgium and the Netherlands. He also travelled to Italy in 1857 and 1872 and spent several months in Bosnia in 1881. He received a state pension from King Ludwig II of Bavaria and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Crown by King Karl I of Württemberg.

Date: 19th century Description: After studying at the classically influenced art academy in Stuttgart, Ebert moved to Munich in 1846 to join the circle of landscape painters around Eduard Schleich. In 1851 he travelled to Paris with Schleich and his artist friend Carl Spitzweg. His stay there and his encounter with the Barbizon group of artists were to fundamentally change his view of landscape painting. Schleich's painting was influenced by his great teachers and models Christian Morgenstern and Carl Rottmann, whose idealising interpretation of nature was strongly influenced by Romanticism. His landscapes sometimes seem to freeze under the atmospheric lighting conditions and the trimmed natural components. In his small sketch, Ebert frees himself completely from this conception of landscape. He discovers the charm of the inconspicuous motif and establishes an almost intimate relationship with it. It is a landscape near Pähl between Lake Ammersee and Lake Starnberg, a frequent destination for Munich artists. But it could be anywhere; Ebert gives no creative definition of the place here. The lines are free, no fixed place is assigned to the light. Nature is in motion, it is alive. It is his paean to open-air painting, which will soon revolutionise the classical system of academy training. 1821 Stuttgart - 1885 München) Weiler in Holland Blick auf eine baumbestandene Niederungs-Landschaft mit Wassermühle, belebt durch eine reiche Staffage aus einer jungen Melkerin mit Joch, Kühen und einer Stute mit Fohlen, rechts im Hintergrund eine Windmühle. 1877 entstanden, gehört dieses Gemälde zu Eberts reifem, spätem Oeuvre, das den Höhepunkt seines künstlerischen Schaffens darstellt. Die Landschaft mit seinem temperamentvollen, auf die Gesamtstimmung hin angelegten Stil basiert auf den Erlebnissen und Studien zweier Holland-Reisen Eberts 1866 und 1877. Zugleich spiegelt es den prägenden Einfluss von Charles-François Daubigny wider, der mit seiner Pleinair-Malerei, Malweise und pastosen Farbauftrag die Impressionisten, besonders Claude Monet, beeinflusste. 1867 reiste Ebert zur Weltausstellung nach Paris, wo er die Kunst Daubignys und der Schule von Barbizon kennenlernte. DIE FESTUNG VRANDUK AN DER BOSNA (HEUTE BOSNIEN UND HERZEGOWINA) Öl auf Leinwand. 110 x 180 cm. Links unten signiert „C. Ebert“. Blick von erhöhtem Standpunkt auf die Festung, die ca. 14 Kilometer flussabwärts von der Stadt Zenica liegt. Sie wurde auf einem Felsen über der Schlucht erbaut, unter der der Fluss Bosna mit seinem, auf der linken Bildseite zu sehendem Rundbogen einen natürlichen Schutz bildet. Im Vordergrund, am Ufer des Flusses, hat sich eine Reisegesellschaft mit ihren vollbepackten Pferden niedergelassen. Die Männer zumeist in hellen Hemden mit Weste, weiten Pumphosen und einem rot-weißen Turban. Hinter ihnen eine halb verfallene alte Hütte und ein Pferd mit einem jungen Fohlen. Auf dem Fluss selbst ein kleines besetztes Ruderboot erkennbar, und auf der anderen Seite weitere Figuren am Flussufer. Die große Burganlage selbst im gleißenden Licht der aufgehenden Morgensonne, die linksseitig durch den hohen aufklarenden blauen Himmel mit weißen Wolkenformationen scheint, während die umgebenden Häuser und Bauten, sowie die linke Gebirgsseite mit dem Fluss, weiter verschattet bleibt. Qualitätvolle Malerei des bekannten Künstlers, mit herausragender Licht- und Schattenführung. Wenige Retuschen. Provenienz: Aus Privatbesitz. Anmerkung: Das vorliegende Gemälde wurde im Dorotheum Wien am 16.11.1993 unter der Lotnummer 84 versteigert. Anmerkung 2: Während des katastrophalen Feldzugs von Eugen von Savoyen im Jahr 1697, als fast ganz Bosnien in Asche und Rauch lag, war die Festung Vranduk die einzige nicht eroberte Festung. Sie widerstand jahrhundertelang allen möglichen Angriffen, Feinden und Katastrophen, aber bestand fast immer gekonnt darauf ihrem Namen als „Tor von Bosnien“ gerecht zu werden.
