Latifa ECHAKHCH Icky Messy way, Dry mud on the knee and no more time to play - 2014 Encre phtalo sur toile Signée, titrée et datée au dos 200 x 150 cm Ink on canvas; signed, titled and dated on the reverse 78.7 x 59.1 in. EN In this series of works, like a vibrant sap, blue ink has seeped into the white canvas through capillary action, forming coral-like branches or a dense network of twigs. As in most of her ink works, Latifa Echakhch initiates a minimal process, then lets time and the materials do their work—in this case, “phthalo” ink, developed in the 1930s from phthalocyanine dye, whose deep blue evokes the artist’s stencils. Because of this aspect of the process left to chance, these paintings could almost be classified as “acheiropoietic” images (meaning “not made by human hands”), a category that includes the Veil of Veronica or Chinese scholar’s stones. The series of works to which this painting belongs was presented at Kamel Mennour during the exhibition All Around Fades to a Heavy Sound… In this exhibition, a series of these blue-ink paintings told a story. It dealt with a walk, with the narrator’s getting lost in a forest. Latifa ECHAKHCH

(born in El Khnansa, Marocco in 1974; lives and works in Vevey, Switzerland) Morgenlied (morningsong) (ré,do,ré,la), 2012, steel, brass (picture hanging system), c. 200 x 500 cm Provenance: Galerie Eva Presenhuber, Zurich (certificate of provenance and labels available) Private Collection Exhibited: Lyon, Latifa Echakch. LAPS, Musée d’art contemporain de Lyon, 15 February – 14 April 2013, exh. cat. n.p. with ill. Note: This work is accompanied by an installation plan. This work titled “Morgenlied” (Morning Song) - part of a series of the same name - revisits a traditional museum display system used for hanging paintings: the metal hanging rail. Here, the artist uses the rods and hanging hooks to create an abstract linear composition on the wall, resembling a musical score. Through this double absence - the paintings that are not visible and the music that is not audible - Latifa Echakhch reveals the evocative power of the display device itself. Latifa Echakhch represented Switzerland in the 59th Venice Biennale (2022). Her works are in many permanent collections, including those of Kunsthaus Zürich; LACMA, Los Angeles; National Museum of Canada; MACBA, Barcelona; Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, François Pinault Collection, Paris/Venice; Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein; Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane; GAMeC, Bergamo. The artist is represented by Pace Gallery, Kaufmann Repetto and Dvir Gallery. Latifa Echakhch has been named winner of the 2013 Marcel Duchamp Prize.

Latifa ECHAKHCH There's tears / Call upon the public to come together in a "single act of unity" - 2015 Encre sur papier journal 52 grammes vierge marouflé sur toile, cadre en bois Signée, titrée et datée au dos 206 x 156 x 4,5 cm Ink on 52 grams blank newspaper mounted on canvas, wooden frame; signed, titled and dated on the reverse 81,10 x 61,42 x 1,77 in. EN  Latifa Echakhch's series "there’s tears" consists of a series of canvases covered with newspaper made illegible. As often happens with Echakhch’s works, the neutrality of a minimal approach implodes at the hand of the simple use of object imbued with a sociological and cultural charge. The act of erasure and the dissolve of the printed texts result in what appears to be a reaction to the newspapers arduous content. Through a gesture that is both poetic and conceptual, the canvas becomes a window that frames reality, a reality no longer controlled by reason, and therefore tragically crude. The loss of meaning transforms into a feeling of mourning. Latifa ECHAKHCH

EN These clouds can be seen as the remnants of a theatrical performance, the abandoned traces of a seemingly innocent staging. At the same time, their position and color introduce a feeling contrary to the setting, evoking a sense of loss and imminent threat. Subversion and mourning intertwine with the seemingly antithetical feelings of memory and hope, reflecting the complexity of life and its inevitable ambivalence. Latifa ECHAKHCH
