milk drop coronet, 1959 sgn. and dated l.r. Harold Edgerton 1959; also sgn. verso in ink Harold Edgerton / MIT 4-405 / Cambridge Mass. chromogenic print; 17.5 by 15.25 in. (sight); matted framed under glass 23.25 by 20.25 in. Provenance: estate of Kenneth Clark, Boston by descent to his husband, the current owner. Harold Edgerton, also known as Papa Flash, was a scientist and professor of electrical engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) in Cambridge, MA. Edgerton became interested in photography in 1931. He is credited with transforming the stroboscope from an obscure laboratory instrument into a device employing it to generate extremely brief bursts of light for his photographic studies. These stop-action pictures made it possible to observe movements that were too fast for the human eye to see. In his milk drop images, Edgerton learned that the shape of the coronet was determined by three factors: the size of the drop, the height from which it fell, and the thickness of the film of milk on the surface from a previous drop. These studies are among Edgerton's most iconic images. The present photograph was printed by Edgerton at M.I.T. in 1959.

Harold Edgerton (1903-1990) Harold Edgerton (1903-1990) ATMOSPHERIC NUCLEAR TEST ONE MILLISECOND AFTER DETONATION, 1946-52, toned Associated Press silver gelatin print, image size, 204 x 153mm, taken with Edgerton's famous Rapatronic Camera, print with A.P press stamps and mimeographed descriptive label attached verso Footnote: In the late 1930s Harold Edgerton, a professor of engineering at MIT, pioneered techniques of ultra-high-speed stroboscopic photography to reveal aspects of the moving world previously invisible to the naked eye-a speeding bullet eviscerating an apple, the graceful spiral of a golf stroke, the coronet formed by a falling drop of milk. During World War II, Edgerton worked with the Atomic Energy Commission to develop a camera, the Rapatronic, capable of capturing the fleeting incandescent flash of a nuclear explosion. Edgerton and his assistants set up their equipment on a tower seven miles from a nuclear test site and, using exposures as short as one-billionth of a second, recorded this ominous glowing shape hovering like an alien life-form or a colossal balloon. Made when the dream of technology threatened to turn into a nightmare, Edgerton's haunting images of nuclear explosions help us visualize the inconceivable. https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/281785
