Here, accompanied by a well-dressed suitor (the only man to appear in any of Eggleston's posters), the woman is looking out over the hustle and bustle of the famous Atlantic City boardwalk, with the ocean and the Steel Pier in the distance. Unlike his other two posters in the series this image doesn't focus on the beach, but on the elegant social elements of the vacation destination. This is the rarest of his three Atlantic City images; we have found only one other copy at auction in the past ten years. Eggleston p. 24.

      Billy Rose's Aquacade. 1937.

      Est: $4,000 - $5,000

ARTIST: EDWARD M. EGGLESTON (1887-1941) SIZE: 27 1/4 x 41 1/2 in./69.2 x 105.5 cm DESCRIPTION: If anything could top Eggleston's Atlantic City triumphs (see PAI-LX, 259, PAI-LXVII, 294, and PAI-LXXXII, 262), this would be it: a Deco swimming spectacular, with a '30s Hollywood starlet fronting the extravaganza! Billy Rose's Aquacade debuted here at the Great Lakes Exposition in Cleveland in 1937. What is an Aquacade, you ask? Nothing less than an all-singing, all-dancing, all-swimming, and diving dream spectacle—the type of performance you'd see in Hollywood spectaculars, but live. Flush with success in Cleveland, Billy Rose took his Aquacade to the 1939 New York World's Fair where it instantly became the most popular attraction—thanks in part to the starring roles of Johnny Weissmuller (Tarzan) and the Olympian Eleanor Holm, who was also Billy Rose's lover. EDWARD M. EGGLESTON (1883-1941) BILLY ROSE'S AQUACADE / GREAT LAKES EXPOSITION. 1936. 43 3/4x28 1/2 inches, 111x72 1/2 cm. L.I.P. & B.A., Cleveland. Condition A. Billy Rose was a songwriter, night club owner, producer and impresario. The first large-scale show he produced outside of a theatre was at the Chicago World's Fair in 1934; from there, he went on to Fort Worth for the Texas Centennial Exposition in 1936. For The Great Lakes Exposition in 1937, he came up with his masterpiece, a synchronized swimming and aquatic show. The show was staged in and around a massive pool, in an outdoor theatre-restaurant that sat 5,000 people. Eleanor Holm and Johnny Weismuller were among his original performers. After the success in Cleveland, Rose went on to stage his Aquacade at the New York World's Fair in 1939, using this image on the cover of the programs for the event. Eggleston did a lot of work for the Pennsylvania Railroad, and like this piece, much of his work features attractive women in the foreground wearing bathing suits, with the destination in the background. Only known to have designed six posters, this is one of the scarcest. With the rare "Travel By Train / New York Central" overprint at bottom.

Condition B+: repaired tears; creases, abrasions and overpainting in margins and image. Disembarking from a train, this stylish woman can't help looking up and smiling at the sights of America's capital. A "City Beautiful" indeed, especially when pictured in a montage of images which places the White House, Supreme Court and Capitol all in the same view. While this is one of the more demure women depicted by Eggleston, his attention to architectural detail remains as sharp as ever. Eggleston p. 24.
