The pyramids are a constant in the work of Eielson, who rescues iconic elements of the pre-Hispanic culture of his country reinterpreting them through a contemporary language. Landscape as an entity to understand thought is a reflection found in all his works, which are generated through a synthesis of concepts and immutable images. The pyramid is understood in this case as a symbol of a space linked to the architecture of pre-Columbian culture. Jorge Eduardo Eielson was a Peruvian artist and writer. As an artist, he is known for his quipus, a reinterpretation of an ancient Andean artifact, considered a precursor of conceptual art. From an early age he developed artistic tendencies: he played the piano, drew copiously and recited poetry. Eielson changed schools several times until the end of his secondary education when he met anthropologist and writer José María Arguedas, who introduced him to Lima's artistic and literary circles, as well as to the knowledge of Peru's ancient civilizations. Eielson began his studies at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in 1941. He won the National Poetry Prize three years later and the National Playwriting Prize in 1948, the year in which he also held a successful art exhibition at the Lima Gallery. That same year he traveled to Paris with a scholarship from the French government, there he exhibited at the Colette Allendy Gallery before traveling to Switzerland thanks to a UNESCO scholarship. In 1951, he traveled to Italy for a summer vacation and decided to settle permanently in Rome. During this period he wrote the collection of poems Habitación en Roma and two novels: El cuerpo de Giulia-No and Primera muerte de María. At the end of the 1950s, he abandoned avant-gardism and resorted to the use of materials such as earth, sand and clay to sculpt on the surface of the canvas; at first he used this technique to represent landscapes, but little by little he approached human figures represented through clothing of various kinds. In 1963 he made his first quipu, reinventing this ancient Andean artifact with brightly colored fabrics, knotted and tied on canvas. Eielson's quipus were exhibited at the 1964 Venice Biennale with great success. In the mid-1970s he traveled to Peru, where he devoted himself to the study of pre-Columbian art; during this period, the National Institute of Culture published most of his poems under the title Poesía escrita (Written Poetry). In 1978 he received a Guggenheim Fellowship to give a lecture in New York.
