(1857 Nemet-Palanka - 1903 München) "Markt in Tanta/Aegypten". 58 cm x 45 cm. Original-Rahmen. Oil on panel. Signed and dated 1886 with location Munich. Titled on original label on the reverse.

      Nov. 14, 2020

Ferencz Eisenhut, Registan Square in Samarkand

      Est: €120,000 - €130,000

Signed, dated and inscribed with the location lower left: Eisenhut Ferencz Samarkand 1890 The midday sun of Uzbekistan burns down hot on the men who have gathered in small groups on Registan Square in Samarkand. The square, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, still contains three majestic medreses (Koran schools) dating from the 15th and 17th centuries. The last medrese (also madrasah, Arabic for "place of study"), the Tilya-Kori madrasah, was not only used for the education of students, but was also one of the most important mosques in the city for many years. The appearance of Registan Square which we admire today is the result of extensive restoration work. Earthquakes, extreme seasonal and diurnal temperature fluctuations, the usual decay and neglect of the building substance due to the economic decline in the 18th and 19th centuries have left the magnificent buildings in ruins. Portals and domes were completely or partially dilapidated, the towers were already leaning precariously and had to be rebuilt, and the ceramic tiles of the facades were partially chipped off, as this painting documents. Two major restorations were carried out in the 1920/1930s and the most comprehensive restoration took place between 1967 and 1987. The friendship between the painters Ferencz Eisenhut and Franz Roubaud seemed to also manifest itself within their oeuvres. The rendering of oriental scenes with brisk but unerring brushstrokes using a bright colour palette, the ability to depict the varying surface textures of the figures and animals as if shimmering in the light while the landscape appears slightly misty and out of focus, like in a photograph, were characteristics shared by both artists. Both also preferred to let their viewers immerse themselves in foreign worlds. Such spectacular compositions by the painter in such a large format rarely appear on the art market.

His father hoped that his son would become a merchant but the Hungarian painter Telepy Karoly soon discovered his artistic interests and ability and encouraged the young Franz to attend the Hungarian drawing school where he studied from 1875-1877. He later went on to study at the prestigious Royal Academy in Munich and established his career and became to be considered one of Austria-Hungary's foremost academic artists of the latter part of the 19th Century.Following completion of his training at the Academy he departed for the Orient, which soon became his main source of inspiration. Soon after his first visit to the Orient, during which he visited the Caucasus, he returned to Europe and held his first exhibition in Budapest, where his focus was and always to remain the same as described by his friend Lyka Karoly as the 'Authentic Orient'. This theme is most evident in the subject matter of the current painting.Following his death in 1903, the artist was buried in Munich; and it is interesting to note, such was his fame in his native country that a street was named after the famed artist in Palanka, the Eisenhutgasse.
