At the beginning of his stay in Paris, he worked as the assistant of the Belgian artist Jan van Beers. Eisman-Semenowsky was celebrated for his portraits of women, which were fervently collected by the Parisian bourgeoisie. Fine, stable and age-appropriate craquelure apparent overall. Very minor losses apparent along the perimeter, under the frame rabbet. Inspection under UV light shows an even layer of varnish and scattered retouching to the craquelure (in no more than 5% of the overall surface). N.B. Emile Eisman-Semenowsky (Polish-French, 1857-1911) A portrait of a young woman in 16th century costume, wearing a red velvet and ostrich feather hat, gold brocade dress with square, chemisette neckline, neck ruffle and elaborate jewelled necklace oil on canvas, in period swept frame 20 x 16in. (50.75 x 40.75cm.) * Condition: Stiff relining and back of canvas lined with cloth. Recent cleaning and fairly extensive restoration. Repaired tear/split to left of her right eye. Some craquelure visible. Examined under UV - clear retouching / repainting in places, notably around the hat, the front of the dress and shoulders, some strengthening visible to facial features, hair and hat string. Hand written label to stretcher detailing attribution by Alan Darwell of Phillips in 1989.
