Provenance Acquired directly from the artist Fatima Hassan El Farrouj through Jacqueline Brodskis, in April 1985, on the occasion of the exhibition "19 peintres du Maroc", presented by the Centre national d'art contemporain de Grenoble. Produced in 1981, between the exhibition at Hamburg's Rade Museum (1980) and the major group show in Grenoble (1985), Cortège illustrates the language that Fatima Hassan El Farouj, self-taught in embroidery, henna, weaving and pottery, forged from traditional arts. The scene - a couple returning to the village accompanied by a loaded animal - unfolds without academic perspective: tight motifs, black circles, interlocking colors. This ornamental density is often mistakenly associated with naïve art; in reality, it stems from a learned iconographic tradition in which the human figure, gardens and nature become the supports of a symbolic and spiritual imagination.

Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist Fatima Hassan El Farrouj through Jacqueline Brodskis, in Paris in April 1985, on the occasion of the exhibition "19 peintres du Maroc", presented by the Centre national d'art contemporain de Grenoble, where the artist appeared alongside Ahmed Cherkaoui, Jilali Gharbaoui, Farid Belkahia, Mohamed Melehi and Chaïbia, among others. Produced in 1981, Cortège belongs to a period when Fatima Hassan El Farouj was consolidating her recognition, notably after her exhibition at Hamburg's Rade Museum in 1980 and before her participation, in 1985, in the major presentation "19 peintres du Maroc" organized by Grenoble's Centre national d'art contemporain. In this work, the artist depicts a rural scene imbued with simplicity: a couple returning to the village accompanied by a loaded animal. The tightly-packed motifs, interlocking colors and use of the black hoop extend the spirit of weaving and embroidery that nourish her language. With no academic perspective, the stylized figures and ornamental density express an intuitive modernity, where narrative blends into a vibrant decorative mesh. Self-taught, Fatima Hassan El Farouj was born in 1945 in Tétouan. Introduced at an early age to traditional arts - embroidery, sewing, henna, weaving and pottery - she developed an imagination nourished by popular motifs, which she transposed into her abundant, meticulous painting. She began exhibiting in 1965, notably at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants in Casablanca, before holding solo shows at the Goethe-Institut in Casablanca (1970), the Rade Museum in Hamburg (1980), the Galerie Nadar (1982) and the Galerie Bab Rouah in Rabat (1983, 1990, 1995). Her work, often mistakenly likened to naive art, draws on a learned iconographic tradition in which the human figure, gardens and nature become the supports of a symbolic and spiritual imagination. She took part in numerous international group exhibitions, including the 1967 Montreal International Exhibition and the 1985 "19 Painters of Morocco" in Grenoble and Paris. The artist passed away in 2011, leaving a dense and instantly recognizable body of work in the landscape of contemporary Moroccan painting.

Format : 30 x 30 cm This work comprises thirty original serigraphs, numbered and signed by Fatima Hassan El Farrouj, justified and signed in pencil, with publisher's stamp. The series, entitled "Le Conte de la jeune fille marocaine" ("The Tale of the Moroccan Girl"), symbolically retraces the journey of every existence: from birth to the discovery of love, via family ties and the rituals of life. Only the first image, still colored, evokes original innocence and the dream of paradise. Gradually, black and white takes over, asserting an ascetic and sacred language. But far from ending in death, this silent tale ends, in reverse, with love rediscovered - in a luminous unity imbued with serenity. "Over time, color is gradually diluted, and a long process of meditation leads her to an asceticism in which the line, drawn in black Indian ink, sets its seal on a white space symbolizing purity, but even more, essentiality. It was in 1984 that she began this long work, which accompanied her maturity and accomplishment as a woman" Rajae Benchemsi, 2006. Fatéma Hassan was introduced to traditional arts at an early age: embroidery, tapestry, weaving and pottery. This long ancestral apprenticeship shapes her imagination and anchors her creation in a living memory, rich in inherited symbols and motifs, which she integrates and reinvents into stylized forms and emblematic figures that express a timeless spirituality. Often wrongly classified as a "naïve" painter, Fatéma Hassan is in fact part of the continuity of a learned tradition, little-known or neglected, in which Arab, Persian or Indian miniatures celebrated divine harmony through the image of the human being. In her work, nature - gardens, flowers, branches - becomes the medium of a desire for paradise, imbued with an intimate and universal faith. More than a ritual gesture, her painting thus becomes an act of piety, an extension of the bond between man and Creation.

In the 1960s, she started developing her exclusive style. Living and working in Rabat, she worked as a seamstress and transferred the skills she had gained in embroidery, sewing, and henna tattoo onto her canvases. Her free expression and naïve style evoke her craft, revealing an imaginary, joyous, universe full of vivid colours and symbols. Depicting genre scenes, landscapes, local customs, and celebration, they invite the viewer on a journey or even a dream where the Morocco and African aspects are omnipresent. Together with Chaibia Tallal, she is regarded as one of the most talented Moroccan female artists of her generation. Her works can be found in important international collections, including that the of Dalloul Art Foundation, Beirut.
