Formé au Caire, puis à Moscou, Venise, Ravenne et Maastricht, il a rapidement développé un langage plastique complexe, mêlant influences cubistes, spiritualité soufie et esthétique populaire égyptienne. L’œuvre Al Kabaa, peinte en 1972, s’inscrit dans une période charnière du parcours d’El Nagdi, marquée par son exploration du mouvement hurufiyya (ou hourfia). Ce courant, né dans les années 1950 dans le monde arabe, consiste à intégrer les lettres de l’alphabet arabe dans une démarche plastique contemporaine, comme signes esthétiques autonomes plutôt que comme porteurs de sens linguistique. Chez El Nagdi, la lettre devient vibration, rythme, structure – un pont entre mysticisme et modernité. Al Kabaa illustre parfaitement cette approche. Sur un format carré intimiste, l'artiste fait danser les formes et les courbes dans une composition dense, presque hypnotique. La lettre arabe, à peine identifiable, se fond dans une trame chromatique chaude et texturée, typique de ses travaux des années 1970. Ce tableau exprime une spiritualité vibrante et silencieuse, où la calligraphie devient corps, et la peinture, prière. Rare sur le marché, Al Kabaa a été exposée à Abou Dhabi en 1975, lors d’une exposition consacrée à l’artiste. Elle a appartenu à Abu Bakr Qasmi, proche de l’artiste, puis à M. Anish Choudhary avant d’être acquise par l’actuel collectionneur. Cette provenance solide, ainsi que la date de création, au cœur de la maturité esthétique d’El Nagdi, en font une pièce précieuse du patrimoine moderne arabe. À travers Al Kabaa, Millon a l’honneur de présenter une œuvre rare et méditative, témoin d’une époque où l’écriture et la peinture ne faisaient plus qu’un. *** A leading figure in modern Arab art, Omar El Nagdi (1931–2019) left a lasting mark on the 20th-century art scene through a bold and singular style deeply rooted in Eastern spirituality and popular culture. Trained in Cairo, then in Moscow, Venice, Ravenna, and Maastricht, El Nagdi developed a complex visual language, blending Cubist structures, Sufi mysticism, and Egyptian folk aesthetics. Al Kabaa, painted in 1972, belongs to a pivotal moment in El Nagdi’s career: his exploration of the hurufiyya movement. Emerging in the Arab world in the 1950s, hurufiyya integrates Arabic letters into modern visual compositions, treating them as autonomous aesthetic forms rather than carriers of linguistic meaning. In El Nagdi’s work, the letter becomes rhythm, vibration, and structure, a spiritual-modernist fusion. In Al Kabaa, the artist offers a compact, intimate composition where fluid forms and curves dance across the canvas. The Arabic script, barely legible, merges into a dense, textured surface, radiating the warm chromatic palette typical of El Nagdi’s 1970s output. The painting evokes a quiet, luminous spirituality in which calligraphy becomes flesh, and painting, a form of prayer. Al Kabaa is rare on the market. It was exhibited in Abu Dhabi in 1975 during a solo show dedicated to the artist. The work was initially acquired directly from the artist by Abu Bakr Qasmi, then passed to Mr. Anish Choudhary, and later acquired by the current owner. Its strong provenance and the significance of its creation date, within El Nagdi’s mature period, make it a prized example of modern Arab heritage. With Al Kabaa, Millon is honored to present a meditative and rare work that stands at the crossroads of calligraphy and abstraction.

The artist was born in Cairo in 1931 and studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Helwan University. Nagdi continued his training in Russia and Italy, eventually graduating from the Academy of Venice in 1967. A prodigious pioneer in Egyptian art history, In the 1960s Nagdi exhibited in Europe alongside the Western masters Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dal. His works were soon acquired by leading institutions around the world. An active member of Cairo's art community and of the Liberal Artists' group headed by Taha Hussein, Nagdi was an extraordinary painter and who equally excels as a film director and music composer. A multi-disciplinary artist, Nagdi worked with sculpture, oil, watercolour and mosaics. Inspired by the diverse cultures that he encountered in rural Egypt, he fused in his works the Pharaonic and Islamic iconography with Cairo's urban culture idioms and Western aesthetics. His works visually enigmatic and captivating and inspired by folk art and traditions are reflections on everyday life in Egypt.His paintings are sufficient proof of his exceptional gifts for symbolic design and the splendid use of colour. Through his expressive textures, colours and symbolic elements, his works offer a communication that is deeply felt.The present lot comes to the market from the distinguished collection of H.E Ambassador Francine Henrich. Le Chat was executed in welded bronze in circa 1970 and was exhibited at the artist's major retrospective at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris in 1994. Showcasing Nadgi's mastery of shapes and material, the present work is visually captivating and aesthetically fascinating. Following his success at the Venice Biennale in 1968, Nagdi was granted an award later that same year at the Alexandria Biennale in Egypt for his sculptures. Mostly recognised for his paintings, Omar El Nagdi's sculptures are rare and as such, the present lot is one of his earlier sculptural masterpieces is undeniably a masterpiece.
