BIOGRAPHY: A painter and a prominent mid 20th century Canadian musician and music teacher, Douglas Ferguson Elliott was born in Woodstock, Ontario and died in Toronto (about 90 miles east of Woodstock), where he had lived most of his life. He was a member of the Ontario Institute of Painters. He was also on the faculty of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto; on the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto; and an organist and choirmaster in Toronto at various venues for 53 years. His paintings are in the Government of Ontario Art Collection and in the permanent collection of the Musee de la Civilisation in Quebec City.His mediums were acrylics and oil paint (applied with a palette knife or thick brush), watercolors and pen & ink. His subjects were landscapes, rural scenes, seascapes, boats and fishing communities. The locations were in Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Gloucester, Massachusetts, all places he visited regularly for half a century. His styles were Impressionism* and Plein Air Painting. The AskART auction results have many excellent illustrations of his work.He had a Bachelor of Music degree; but, as a painter he was mostly self-taught. However, he did some studying in the United States under Emile Gruppe; and, was probably influenced by artist Adrian Dingle RCA who was a frequent Elliott painting companion.Elliott was an Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Music, an Associate of the Canadian College of Organists, a member of the Ontario Institute of Painters, and a member of the Fine Arts Society of Milton (a community in the Greater Toronto Area).     Boldly painted, oil on panel, of a mountain road in early spring. In the distnce the sun is setting, creating an orange sky. Raised in Woodstock, Ontario, Douglas began a long distinguished career in music, earning his MusBac in composition after serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force in WWII. During the war he was Music Director of the Greenwood Male Choir. Their well known concerts were broadcast weekly on CBC radio. A brilliant recitalist both on organ and piano, he served on the faculty of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto. He was an organist and choirmaster in Toronto for 53 years serving at various religious communities. He had over 50 solo exhibitions in galleries across Canada, and his work is represented in private and corporate collections around the world, including the permanent collection of Ontario House in London England as well as in many private collections in Sweden, England, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the United States. An avid outdoor painter, he loved capturing the true atmosphere of each season on canvas and documenting East coast harbours and fishing communities, particularly in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Gloucester, Massachusetts. He and his wife Elizabeth spent 50 wonderful summers painting, camping and trailering. His companion on many of these trips was Adrian Dingle (RCA, OSA). Douglas also studied in the United States under Emile Gruppe. He paints in a loose impressionist style mainly with a palette knife and a thick brush. Douglas was a member of the Ontario Institute of Painters and a member of the Fine Art Society of Milton. Douglas passed away at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Veterans' Wing, aged 96.
