In 1968, he moved to New York City and studied at the Arts Student League, School of Visual Arts and Pratt Graphics Center. Here he studied graphic design, painting and printmaking. Westport AuctionThe woolly brown textures enhance the creature comfort of the two adults embracing on the plush sofa, with palpable coldness in the air. The child is seen clasping his hands together. Perhaps, the baby fat of the plumb body will suffice. Indoors, all wrapped up and cuddled up from the chilly winds outside, and with the heater on, the occupants appear contented as can be gleaned from their faces. It's one of the drawbacks, if at all, in staying in places which have autumn and winter. Eng Tay, nee Tay Eng Chye, made a beeline for the Big Apple, studying at the Art Students League (1968-1972) and the School of Visual Arts (1972-1978), both in New York. He first made his mark in printmaking, before embarking on paintings, large canvases, and monumental sculptures in bronze. With nearly 100 solos in the United States and Europe and Asia, he travelled extensively. In 2009, he was accorded a Retrospective by Galeri Petronas called simply, Eng Tay: The Exhibition. His monumental sculptures in Kuala Lumpur adorn the Kiaraville SENI condominiums in Mont Kiara, the Zehn condominium in Pantai Hills and Marc condominium near KLCC. His works are in the collection of the Taipei Fine Arts Museum; the Fukuyama Museum of Art, Hiroshima in Japan; the Frankie Valli Estate (United States); the Merv Griffin Estate (United States); and the New York University.

Henry Butcher Art AuctioneersThe Asian Family Unit is under threat today, what with more economical travel and all the electronic visceral distractions. Family members are seldom home and don't even meet during mealtimes as in the past, with the Confucian axiology constantly being challenged and obverted, if not subverted. More than nostalgia, Eng Tay's canvas exudes old-fashioned values of family love and time together. The meals, the light banter and small talk, even the sharing of tears, in the cosy warmth of the home interior often couched in darker colours as a blanket of solace. It was only after the Sept 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Centre that Eng Tay ventures outdoors, bringing neighbours and strangers, irregardless of ethnicities, into an informal communion. But love has to be fostered within the family before it can embrace the greater good of a larger community. Eng Tay, nee Tay Eng Chye, has excelled as a painter, printmaker and sculptor since he went to New York City to study at the Art Students League and then the Pratt Graphics Centre. The high point of his career was when he was honoured with a Retrospective by Galeri Petronas in 2009, which was simply called Eng Tay, The Exhibition. He travels widely even to South America, and especially the rural communities, and all over Asia, where he got insights and inspirations to his figure-types which he also made into monumental sculptures at Kiaraville (Mont Kiara), Zehn condominiums (Pantai Hills) and Marc Residences. His works are among others, in the collection of the Fukuyama Museum of Art, Hiroshima (Japan), the Taipei Fine Art Museum (Taiwan), the New York University, the Frankie Valli Estate and the Merv Griffin Estate (both in the United States).
