International lawyer Arthur Jaffé was an eminent scholar and collector of miniature paintings. He was an authority on John Smart, and spent many years researching the miniaturist, with the intention of writing a catalogue raisonné of the artist’s works. Although he died before the task could be completed, the body of work he had produced formed the basis of Daphne Foskett’s book, John Smart. The Man and his Miniatures, published in 1964. Henry Salkeld married Anne Gibson in 1808, and lived in Thames Ditton, Surrey.

Knox / Hertford Street Mayfair / Pinxit / 1810' (on a label to the reverse) watercolour on ivory, oval, in a gold frame engraved with the sitter's identity 8.5cm Provenance: Bonhams, London, 28th January 2014, lot 371, when acquired by the late Barry Lock (1934-2021) The sitter was the eldest son of Thomas Knox (1754-1840) and his wife, the Hon. Diana Jane, daughter of Edmund Pery, 1st Viscount Pery. He studied at St. John's College, Cambridge, before embarking on a career in politics. In 1812, Knox succeeded his father as M.P. for County Tyrone and later for Dungannon between 1818-1830. He gained the courtesy title Viscount Northland upon his father's elevation to the earldom of Ranfurly in 1831 and later succeeded his father as the 2nd Earl of Ranfurly in 1840. He married Mary Juliana, daughter of the Most Reverend William Stuart, in 1815, by whom he had four sons and six daughters. Upon his death in 1858, he was succeeded by his eldest son, Thomas. This item is offered for sale in accordance with the Ivory Act 2018 and has been assigned an exemption certificate, Ref. No. QJY9EHPQ.
