(1834 Eberbach - 1910 München) Das Morgengebet Im Hergottswinkel einer wohl Tiroler Bauernstube unter Heiligenbildern sitzt die Mutter mit drei Kindern am Tisch, auf dem eine gemeinsame Schüssel mit Milchsuppe steht. Es ist der Moment des Morgengebets, zu dem auch das Kleinkind auf dem Schoß der Mutter bereits angeleitet wird. Von links fällt Tageslicht auf die Szenerie, welches in dem sonst dunklen Raum zu reizvollen Hell-Dunkel-Kontrasten führt. Rudolf Epp reiste insbesondere nach Oberbayern, Tirol und in den Schwarzwald, um Motive zum Leben der einfachen frommen Landbevölkerung zu sammeln, welche anschließend die Grundlage seines Oeuvres bildeten. Der Künstler, dessen große Erfolge schon zu Lebzeiten bis nach Amerika ausstrahlten, wird der Münchner Malerschule zugerechnet. Öl/Lwd., doubl.; U. l. sign.; 92 cm x 79 cm. Rahmen. (1834 Eberbach - 1910 München) Brustbildnis eines alpenländischen Bauernmädchens in Tracht Darstellung vor neutralem graubraunem Hintergrund, das Mädchen in Tracht mit Schal, weißer Bluse, rotem Kleid und federbesetztem Hut, die dunkelblonden Haare nach hinten zu einem Zopf geflochten, den Kopf mit offenem Blick fast en face zum Betrachter. Feinflüssig gemaltes, einfühlsam charakterisierendes, motiv- und stiltypisches Porträt Epps. Der an der Karlsruher Akademie bei Johann Wilhelm Schirmer und Ludwig Des Coudres ausgebildete Maler ging 1863 nach München, wo er zu einem der bedeutendsten Künstler der Münchener Schule wurde. Durch seine subtilen, deliziösen Genregemälde mit ihren lebensnah geschilderten Figuren in Interieurs sowie seine weiblichen, oft ländlichen Bildnisse und lieblichen Kinderporträts erlangte er rasch auch international Erfolg. Rudolf Epp (german, 1834-1910) "Woman with a Red Shawl" Oil on Wood Panel. A portrait of a pretty young woman in a simple dress with a red shawl. Both the colors and light values of the painting are subdued. While this painting is typical of an Epp portrait in the sense that it is a genre work executed in the Academic style, the somber mood of the picture is unusual. Much of Epp's work was commercial in nature and targeted to 19th century European tastes. However, in this painting Rudolf Epp applies his considerable skills to the production of a far more contemplative and intimate work. Likely mahogany panel.The panel is supported on the reverse by five horizontal wooden battens which are glued and screwed into place. This type of batten support system has historically been utilized to stabilize paintings on wooden panels and thus avoid warping. The painting is in very good condition have been expertly restores by Great Lakes Art Conservation Ltd on Cleveland Ohio. Professionally framed in guilt and black painted wood deep frame. In frame 15 1/2"x18 1/2"x1 3/4". Weight 5 lbs. PROVENANCE: A private Charleston SC collection

He then studied at the Grand Ducal Baden Art School Karlsruhe as a student of Johann Wilhelm Schirmer and attended the Art Academy in Dusseldorf.Due to his obvious talent, he was recognized by the then rulers and later Grand Duke Friedrich I von Baden on leave from military service. A Grand-Ducal Order, as well as additional funding allowed Epp, a study trip to the Black Forest. The year 1859 saw him spend long periods of time painting and drawing in the vicinity of Freiburg im Breisgau and Landstuhl .Rudolf Epp married in 1862 and moved to Munich in 1863. He was then influenced by the work of Karl von Piloty, director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He attained at this time a great fame which would not leave him until the end of his days, the public appreciating his genre paintings and his landscapes.

From his youth he did much drawing on his own initiative and took his first lessons from landscape painter Charles Ludwig Seeger. He then studied at the Grand Ducal Baden Art School Karlsruhe as a student of Johann Wilhelm Schirmer and attended the Art Academy in Dusseldorf.Due to his obvious talent, he was recognized by the then rulers and later Grand Duke Friedrich I von Baden on leave from military service. A Grand-Ducal Order, as well as additional funding allowed Epp, a study trip to the Black Forest. The year 1859 saw him spend long periods of time painting and drawing in the vicinity of Freiburg im Breisgau and Landstuhl .Rudolf Epp married in 1862 and moved to Munich in 1863. He was then influenced by the work of Karl von Piloty, director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He attained at this time a great fame which would not leave him until the end of his days, the public appreciating his genre paintings and his landscapes.

Originaltitel Bekleidet mit einem weißen Hemdchen sitzt der pausbäckige, dunkle Lockenschopf auf einem Kissen in der Stube, blickt den Betrachter mit seinen rosigen Wangen unschuldig an und nascht genüsslich aus einer Schale mit leuchtendroten Kirschen, während sich zu seinen Füßen bereits einige abgenagte Kirschkerne und abgebrochene Fruchtstiele sammeln. Liebevoll charakterisiertes, reizvolles Genrebild Epps, der an der Karlsruher Akademie bei Johann Wilhelm Schirmer und Ludwig Des Coudres studierte und 1863 nach München ging, wo er durch seine subtilen, deliziösen Genregemälde mit ihren lebensnah geschilderten Figuren in Interieurs rasch zu einem auch international gefragten Maler wurde.
