Yseux (Louis, binder).- Erasmus (Desiderius) Eloge de la Folie, translated by Pierre de Nolhac, number 39 of 109 copies with a suite of etchings with remarques, from an edition limited to 130, etched plates and illustrations by Chas-Laborde, splendid crushed brown morocco tooled in gilt, by Louis Yseux, with central scallop-edged shape and corners outlined in double gilt lines and filled with semé of gilt rosettes interspersed with small gilt squares, spine titled in gilt between two raised bands and compartments with similar gilt rules and ornaments, turn-ins with rosettes at intervals connected by lines of small gilt dots, signed Yseux sr. de Simier at foot of front turn-in, yellow silk crepe linings, marbled endpapers, original pink wrappers bound in, t.e.g., others uncut, spine very slightly faded, marbled board slip-case (a little rubbed at edges), 4to (c.280 x 25mm.), Paris, 1927.*** Louis Yseux (d.1951) trained under Durvand and in 1916 took over the workshop of Thierry, the successor of Petit-Simier, thereafter signing his bindings as successor to Simier.

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION OF THIS TRANSLATION OF ERASMUS' PRAISE OF FOLLY. The translator, Louis Petit (1615-1693), was a Rouen-born satirical poet whose best-known work was A Fleuranche. He was an intimate friend of Pierre Corneille.

Erasmus von Rotterdam, Desiderius. Paraphrasis oder Postilla Teütsch. Das ist klare Außlegung aller Evanglischen unn Apostolischen Schrifften des Neuwen Testaments. 32 Bl., CCCCCXCIII num. Bl. Mit Holzschnitt-Druckermarke auf dem Titel und zahlreichen Text-Holzschnitten. 30,5 x 19,5 cm. Schweinsleder d. Z. (berieben, bestoßen und fleckig) über abgefasste Holzdeckel, fünf Bünden und mit zwei Messingschließen. (Zürich, Froschauer, 1552). Nicht im Adams nicht im STC. – Wohl einzige deutsche Ausgabe unter diesem Titel. Froschauer druckte zeitgleich eine weitere Ausgabe der "Paraphrasis", diese erschien jedoch unter dem Titel "Paraphrasis oder Erklärung des gantzen neüwen Testaments", in der eine Vorrede von Leo Juds enthalten ist. Erwähnt den Übersetzter auf dem Titel nicht, ebenso fehlt das Erscheinungsjahr. Diese beiden Ausgaben spiegeln die konfessionelle Spaltung wieder; war die vorliegende für den reformierten Leser bestimmt, richtete sich die die Postilla an das katholische Publikum (vgl. Historia integra, 1977, S. 118). Von uns konnten nur vier weitere Exemplare in europäischen Bibliotheken bestimmt werden: Erzbischöfliche Diözesan- und Dombibliothek, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek und Zentralbibliothek Zürich. – Sehr selten im Handel. Titel braun- und fingerfleckig, Innensteg am Titel offen. Insgesamt etwas braun- und fingerfleckig, die letzten sechs Blätter mit kleiner Fehlstelle (minimaler Textverlust).

Concio de puero Jesu Deventer Dirk van de Borne [1515] 4to, [10] ff, large woodcut on title-page, entirely rubricated in red. Small marginal tear skilfully repaired in title-page. Modern cloth binding Ref. NK 796. Very scarce edition: only 1 copy in USTC (BL). Not in Bibl. Erasmiana Bruxellensis. In Concio de puero Jesu or Sermon of the child Jesus, a child preaches like a priest. This work is connected to a mediaeval tradition still current in the 16th century, namely, the tradition of the Boy Bishop. Each year on Saint Nicholas's Day (6 December), the Roman Catholic cathedral choirboys elected one of them to be bishop. He was dressed in a replica bishop's robe, with staff and ring, whilst the other boys, wearing priests' habits, took possession of the church and led all the ecclesiastic processions and ceremonies save mass. This power reversal lasted until the Feast of the Holy Innocents, 28 December. Erasmus wrote this sermon in 1511, at the request of his friend, John Colet, dean of Saint Paul?s Cathedral in London. The sermon was supposed to be read aloud by a Boy Bishop to inaugurate the new St Paul's Cathedral School

Erasmus von Rotterdam, Desiderius. Paraphrasis oder Postilla Teütsch. Das ist klare Außlegung aller Evanglischen unn Apostolischen Schrifften des Neuwen Testaments. 32 Bl., CCCCCXCIII num. Bl. Mit Holzschnitt-Druckermarke auf dem Titel und zahlreichen Text-Holzschnitten. 30,5 x 19,5 cm. Schweinsleder d. Z. (berieben, bestoßen und fleckig) über abgefasste Holzdeckel, fünf Bünden und mit zwei Messingschließen. (Zürich, Froschauer, 1552). Nicht im Adams nicht im STC. – Wohl einzige deutsche Ausgabe unter diesem Titel. Froschauer druckte zeitgleich eine weitere Ausgabe der "Paraphrasis", diese erschien jedoch unter dem Titel "Paraphrasis oder Erklärung des gantzen neüwen Testaments", in der eine Vorrede von Leo Juds enthalten ist. Erwähnt den Übersetzter auf dem Titel nicht, ebenso fehlt das Erscheinungsjahr. Diese beiden Ausgaben spiegeln die konfessionelle Spaltung wieder; war die vorliegende für den reformierten Leser bestimmt, richtete sich die die Postilla an das katholische Publikum (vgl. Historia integra, 1977, S. 118). Von uns konnten nur vier weitere Exemplare in europäischen Bibliotheken bestimmt werden: Erzbischöfliche Diözesan- und Dombibliothek, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek und Zentralbibliothek Zürich. – Sehr selten im Handel. Titel braun- und fingerfleckig, Innensteg am Titel offen. Insgesamt etwas braun- und fingerfleckig, die letzten sechs Blätter mit kleiner Fehlstelle (minimaler Textverlust).

Die vorliegende Übersetzung stammt von dem Humanisten und Freidenker Sebastian Franck (1499-1542), dessen Sympathien für „Ketzer“ zu seiner Inhaftierung in Strassburg im Jahr 1531 und seiner anschliessenden Ausweisung aus der Stadt führten. Im Jahr 1534 liess er sich in Ulm nieder und veröffentlichte das vorliegende Werk. - Fliegende Vorsätze entfernt. Durchgehend gebräunt und feuchtfleckig in den Rändern, die ersten 10 Blatt des vorgebundenen Werkes mit Eckabrissen (ohne Textverluste). Stellenweise etwas fingerfleckig, wenige Marginalien von alter Hand.
