MAX ERNST (Brühl, Germany, 1891 – Paris, 1976). “Monkey Pursued by an Elephant for a Flight of Hat,” 1974. Color lithograph on paper, print no. 56/99. Signed and numbered in pencil. Printed by Pierre Chave. Bibliographic reference: Spies/Leppien, no. B1014. Measurements: 58 x 47 cm (image); 76.6 x 57 cm (paper). This lithograph captures with particular clarity the world of Max Ernst, where absurd humor, metamorphosis, and irrational association transform the image into a sort of surrealist hieroglyph. In the center, an elephant chases an ape-like figure—a deliberately incongruous scene surrounded by a wreath of medallions featuring hats, feathers, and ambiguous shapes. The work belongs to the artist’s late period, when Ernst revisited and reworked many of the techniques and symbols that had defined his career since his days in Dadaism and Surrealism. The delicate palette of blues, yellows, and violets is a hallmark of the scene's unsettling nature, while his penchant for imaginary taxonomies ties in with his collages, graphic novels, and fantastical bestiaries. Max Ernst was a key figure in Dadaism and Surrealism, and one of the great innovators of the visual arts in the 20th century. He experimented with techniques such as collage, frottage, grattage, and decalcomania, exploring chance and the unconscious as driving forces of creation. His work is held in institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Tate.

Kornfeld Collection, Bern Zustand / Condition Am rechten Rand auf der Platte eine minimale Verfärbung, insgesamt in sehr guter Erhaltung At the right margin on the plate a minimal discolouration, overall in very good condition Erläuterungen / Comments Das Schachspiel ist ein wiederkehrendes Thema im Schaffen von Max Ernst, so entstehen bereits in den 1920er-Jahren vergleichbare Spielfiguren. The game of chess is a recurring theme in Max Ernst's oeuvre; comparable chess pieces were already created in the 1920s. About thirty years later, the Surrealist presents the chess pieces queen, bishop, and knight in a more restrained and controlled formal language. The total edition amounts to 97 copies, of which our example comes from the light bronze edition and was cast by Barth in Elmenhorst. The "Nature morte" is among Max Ernst's works in which he engaged with the appropriation and reworking of found print templates. He developed this process as early as 1919 in the Dada context and continued it throughout the 1920s. Through these reworkings, he detached the original depiction—here probably a naturalistic still life—from its traditional context and transformed it into an independent, surrealistically influenced visual language. The work exemplifies Ernst's early interest in the alienation and poetic reinterpretation of existing pictorial worlds. He creates from strawberries two "Erdbeerbündel" which do not occur in nature, and integrates them into a suggested landscape. A wonderfully poetic and at the same time surreal work. "La brebis galante" (in German: "Das kokette Schaf") is an artist's book published in 1949, created in collaboration with the poet Benjamin Péret. Ernst illustrated the surrealist opus with colour etchings depicting fantastic, dreamlike creatures. The work is considered a significant example of surrealist book art. Max Ernst, one of the most versatile artists of modernism, a revolutionary of vision and a pioneer of Surrealism, demonstrates with the present collage how innovative and creative he could be, but also how surprising and disconcerting. MAX ERNST (Brühl, Germany, 1891 – Paris, 1976). “C’est bien,” 1972. Original lithograph printed on Japanese paper, copy H.C. XI/XIX. Signed and numbered by hand. Measurements: 38 x 28 cm. A German artist who became a naturalized French citizen, considered a key figure in both the Dada movement and Surrealism. Throughout his varied artistic career, Ernst was known as a tireless experimenter, employing an extraordinary diversity of techniques, styles, and materials. In all his works, he sought the ideal means to express, in two or three dimensions, the extradimensional world of dreams and the imagination. In 1909, he enrolled at the University of Bonn, where he studied philosophy, art history, literature, and psychiatry. His earliest works date from this period; their Expressionist influence reveals the mark of his friendship with August Macke. In 1922, he moved to Paris, where he began painting surrealist works in which solemn human figures and fantastical creatures inhabit Renaissance-style spaces rendered with meticulous precision (L’éléphant célèbre, 1921, Tate Gallery, London). In 1925, he invented frottage; later, he experimented with grattage. In 1930, he made his film debut as an actor in *L’Age d’Or* (The Golden Age), the second Surrealist film by Spanish director Luis Buñuel. His work would have a profound influence on countless artists.
