Born in Holland, Maurits Cornelis Escher studied graphic arts as a young man. He would later spend many years living in Italy, Switzerland, and Belgium, sketching the architecture and landscapes. Maurits Cornelis Escher's drawings portray his interest in fantastic, albeit impossible shapes. These include landscapes with a unique take on near and far, or high and low, as is seen in his lithograph Castrovalva.

    Houtsnede uit 1958, midden in blok gemonogrammeerd en gedateerd XI-'58 en l.o. handgesigneerd, r.o. geannoteerd "eigen druk", herkomst nalatenschap dhr. J. Mugge, hoofdingenieur Nederland bij Siemens, geschenk van zijn werkgever bij jubileum. Conditie: enige kleine plekjes foxing verder mooi wit papier, enkele bobbelingen door inlijsting maar geen schade. Alleen aan randen geplakt met tape aan passe-partout. Bol nr. 429, p. 153 uitleg en een citaat van Escher over dit werk: "Maar in 1958 zag Escher in een boek van de wiskundige H.S.M. Coxeter een figuur die hem in verrukking bracht Zonder de zin van de figuur in de context van Coxeters boek te begrijpen, zag hij er meteen in wat hij voor zijn oneindigheidsbenadering zocht. Hij ontdekte zelf hoe de figuur te construeren was, en vulde hem met visjes, oneindig veel visjes. ... .... laat zeer veel te wensen over wat expressiviteit betreft. En tóch bevredigt mij dit resultaat als iets waar ik jaren lang tevergeefs naar heb gezocht. De omvang van mijn vispatronen, maximaal van grootte in het centrum, slinkt gaandeweg naar buiten toe en bereikt de limiet van het oneindige kleine formaat en tevens van het oneindige grote aantal in een cirkel die alles omsluit.'"
