Painter framed within the romantic costumbrismo, Antonio Casanova y Estorach began his training in the study of José Planella and the School of La Lonja in Barcelona. In the latter he was a disciple of Claudio Lorenzale, Pablo Milá Fontanals and Ramón Martí Alsina. Pensioned in Madrid, he completed his studies there at the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando, as a student of Federico de Madrazo and Carlos Luis Ribera. He also took advantage of his stay in the capital to make numerous copies in the Prado Museum. In 1870 the Diputación de Barcelona granted him a scholarship to further his studies in Rome, where Casanova y Estorach stayed for two years. On his return to Spain, the painter abandoned history painting and focused on the orientalist and genre themes he had discovered in the Italian capital, which would soon become his specialty. Within his production of this type, he achieved great fame with his satirical, humorous or simply costumbrist representations of ecclesiastical themes. In 1875 he left for Paris, where he settled permanently until his death. Throughout his career, Casanova y Estorach repeatedly attended the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts in Madrid, and won two second-class medals in 1883 and 1887. Likewise, he participated in the Paris Universal Exhibitions of 1878 and 1889, obtaining a third medal in the latter edition. After an initial stage dedicated to history painting, Casanova y Estorach evolved towards a mature style, related to Fortuny, Meissonier and F. Domingo, a brilliant painting centered on orientalist and genre themes, marked by the preciosity of his brushstroke. Currently, Antonio Casanova y Estorach is represented in the Prado Museum, the National Museum of Art of Catalonia, the Municipal Museum and the City Council of Tortosa.

The bulk of creations made throughout his life, whether large canvases of history or small genre productions, becomes a wide catalog of expressions. We can affirm that he is one of the most solvent Catalan artists when it comes to showing the different facial manifestations. This work was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1882, with the number 495. Work mentioned in the book "One Hundred Years of Painting in Spain and Portugal Volume 2", p. 43. It illustrates an episode of the French Wars of Religion. After the death of Henry III in 1589, Henry IV, trying to recover his kingdom, organized the siege of Paris, then under the control of the League. The resistance began and on May 14, 1590, under the orders of the Bishop of Senlis and a priest of Saint Jacques de la Boucherie, a procession of armed monks paraded through the streets of the capital. The siege continued until the arrival of Alexander Farnese's troops, forcing Henry IV to retreat. It shows occasional deterioration. Dimensions: 220 x 168 cm

In this canvas, we can clearly appreciate the preciosist style that Casanova and Estorach cultivated. Underneath the swift and rapid brushstrokes with broken touches that give the image an intuitive and spontaneous aspect, there is a patient and polished work, based on superimposed layers, thanks to which the expressions seem to come to life. See here the two friars, the priceless mischievousness of their mimicry: one looks sideways, almost squinting, at the young girl; the other, with his lips tight and his hand around his chin as if he were meditating, also seems to be ogling the woman, who for her part does not notice anything, or pretends not to notice. Because, in the end, everything is a game of simulations in this brilliant painting, splendid in theme and technique. In fact, the scenes of monks, cardinals and other ecclesiastics, enjoying a comfortable life or delighting in the contemplation of the other sex, were this painter's favourites. Casanova i Estorach drew formally on Baroque sources, particularly the naturalism of the portraits of Velázquez, Frans Hals and Rembrandt. In this canvas we can see one of Antonio Casanova's favourite themes, the portraits of clergymen. In this case it is a portrait with a clear costumbrista accent, which presents us with a monk, dressed in a simple habit magnificently worked with broad brushstrokes of Velázquez's inheritance. It is an image charged with expressiveness and instantaneity, a fleeting moment immortalised by the artist's hand and enhanced by a simple composition that focuses on the figure, leaving the rest empty, and by an effective lighting that is heir to Baroque tenebrism. Critics always emphasised Casanova and Estorach's great capacity for portraiture. The bulk of the works he produced during his lifetime, whether large history canvases or small genre productions, constitute a wide-ranging catalogue of expressions. We can affirm that he is one of the most solvent Catalan artists when it comes to showing different facial expressions. The paint surface is slightly convex in part. The canvas has been relined. There is a patch on the reverse. The inspection under UV light reveals a major restoration to the picnic blanket and some other small touch-ups within the representation. The frame is slightly chipped. Antonio Salvador Casanova y Estorach (1847-1896) Antonio Salvador Casanova y Estorach was trained by Claudio Lorenzale and Federico de Madrazo. His work is attributed to the romantic orientation of Costumbristas. The Costumbristas featured the customs of the academic style, which in Europe was prevalent at that time, but also the innovations of impressionism are evident in his paintings. He painted mainly history and folkloric scenes in small format. He spent much of his life in Paris.
