Size: 67 x 90 cm; 94 x 125 cm (frame). Maternities and images featuring children were common in Estrany's painting. In this particular case, the scene, which is set against an ethereal, delicate and subtle background, the artist presents us with two young girls and a woman. The lady's red tunic and blue cloak indicate that she is the Virgin, while the young men are Jesus and Saint John, who is watching his cousin sleep. The manner in which Estrany portrays this religious scene is a departure from the usual depictions of the Virgin and Child, thus placing us in a 19th-century context in which the artist emphasises a moment of intimacy with protagonists whose faces are taken from everyday life, thus lending the image veracity and awakening values such as empathy. Estrany trained at the School of Arts and Crafts in Mataró and at the Baixas Academy in Barcelona, and finally extended his training at the Julien Academy in Paris. From there he moved to Belgium, where he met James Ensor, from whom he received valuable lessons. Throughout his career Estrany presented more than sixty solo exhibitions, and participated in group exhibitions in Spain, Mexico, Panama and Rome. He was awarded prizes at numerous national exhibitions in Madrid and Catalonia, by the Royal Academy of Sant Jordi, by the Agrupación de Acuarelistas de Cataluña and at international exhibitions in Mexico and Panama. He also carried out important teaching work, and was director of the School of Arts and Crafts in his native city. He is currently represented in various Spanish public and private collections.
