Paul (1931) Evans Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1931 - d. 1987

Paul R. Evans II (20 May 1931 – 7 March 1987), known as Paul Evans, was an American-born furniture designer, sculptor, and artist, who is famous for his contributions to American furniture design and the American Craft movement of the 1970s, and with his work with the influential American manufacturer Directional Furniture. His creation of metal-sculpted furniture set him apart. He studied at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, settled in New Hope, Pennsylvania, and, for a time, shared a showroom there with woodworker Phillip Lloyd Powell.

Paul Evans was born in Newtown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He studied at several institutions, including the Philadelphia Textile Institute (1950), Rochester Institute of Technology, School for American Craftsmen, in Rochester, New York (1950), and Cranbrook Academy of Art, in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (1952).

Settling in New Hope, Evans set up a collaboration with Powell. Without much money, the partners would get their wood from the reject pile of their neighbor, the woodworker and furniture designer George Nakashima.

In the 1950s, Evans began making copper chests and followed with sculpted steel-front cabinets. Evans had a two-man show in 1961 at America House, an exhibition held at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York (now the Museum of Arts & Design). In 1964, Evans became a featured designer for manufacturer Directional Furniture. With Directional Furniture, Evans introduced several furniture lines, such as Argente series, Sculpted Bronze series, Sculptured and Painted Steel, Patchwork Copper, Pewter and Brass, and the popular Cityscape series. According to the New York Times, Evans "understood fashion, embraced youth culture and built custom pieces for celebrities like the ventriloquist Shari Lewis and the singer Roy Orbison."

Evans pieces were frequently signed, and some of the custom items have a signature and a date. Evans's combination of handcraft and technology anticipated the limited-edition art furniture of today. The artist's relationship with Directional Furniture set a unique standard for creative manufacture by insisting every piece be made by hand, finished by hand, and supervised by the artist at each step of production, one piece at a time.

On March 6, 1987, Evans shut down his business and drove to his vacation home on Nantucket. The next morning, he had a heart attack and died. He was 55.

He studied sculpture, metal work and silver and gold smithing. In the 1950s Evans began his career making copper chests and sculpted steel-front cabinets. In 1964 Evans became the designer for furniture manufacturer Directional Furniture. With them he introduced several series of furniture lines; such as the Argente series of one-off studio pieces, Sculpted Bronze series and the popular Cityscape series. His relationship with them set a very high standard for creative manufacturing, insisting that every piece is made and finished by hand under his strict supervision. His pieces were almost always signed, and all the custom items have a signature and a date. Paul Evans' combination of handcraft and technology anticipated the limited-edition art furniture of today. His designs are easily identifiable and highly collectable.

He studied woodworking in high school and briefly attended the Philadelphia Textile Institute. Evans was awarded the Aileen O. Webb Scholarship in 1950 and studied at the prestigious Rochester Institute of Technology’s School for American Craftsmen. He would continue his studies at Cranbrook in 1952 with a focus on metalwork. In 1953 he took a position as the metal craftsman at the living museum, Old Sturbridge Village. Feeling that his creativity was being stifled, Evans left the museum in 1955 to find a more stimulating environment. He opened a showroom with fellow designer Phillip Lloyd Powell and the two began a decade-long collaboration. Evans’ experiments with welded and enamelled sculpture in the early 1960s caught the eye of the Directional furniture company. Directional was looking for handmade furniture with distinctive character and Evans’ new American craft designs were a perfect fit. In 1971, Evans developed the brass and chrome Cityscape line for Directional marking a departure from his earlier sculptural works. In the 1980s, working with his son Keith, an electrical engineer, he continued to experiment with new materials and design increasing minimal forms with kinetic elements. Together, they formed Zoom, Inc. in 1983 and began a relationship with the Design Institute of America. In 1987, just one day after his retirement, Evans suffered his third heart attack and died. Evans is now internationally recognized as one of the great studio furniture makers of the 20th century. In his finest work, such as Argente and Sculpted Front, he deploys his training in welding, metallurgy, and jewellery design to sculpt brutal and beautiful furniture in metal—work that prefigured the art furniture movement today.
