Although his father was a prosperous mill owner in Galloway and the Faed family did not face poverty at close quarters, the rural community in which he was raised offered ample opportunity to witness the plight of the poor and Faed was fascinated by the strenuous existence of those for whom life was hard. Soon after he graduated from the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh, Faed began to paint historical pictures illustrating subjects from Burns and Scott but he soon realised that genre paintings of more humble, anonymous, domestic drama were more popular. He exhibited from 1844 in Edinburgh but it was not until 1851 that he showed his first picture at the Royal Academy, a painting entitled Scottish Piety. A year later, he moved to London. Encyclopedia Americana of 1886 wrote of Faed; 'It has been truly said that Thomas Faed has done for Scottish art what Robert Burns did for Scottish song. He has made it attract universal interest and command universal respect.' (Mary McKerrow, The Faeds, A Biography, 1982, p.108). The 1860s and 70s were Thomas Faed's most productive years. In 1860 Agnew's mounted an exhibition of nine of his works. Such an exhibition was then an unusual tribute to be paid to a living artist.

(SCOTTISH 1826-1900) WHERE'S MY GOOD LITTLE GIRL Signed and dated 1881, oil on canvas (53.5cm x 74cm (21in x 29in)) Footnote: Exhibited: Probably the painting exhibited at the Royal Academy 1881 Note: Where is My Good Little Girl? was highly regarded by critics of the day: 'Mr. T. Faed’s two pictures (Nos. 187, 542) are both pretty. Where is My Good Little Girl? Is the best. It is, as this artist so often gives us, the interior of a Scottish cottage, with mother and baby seated; she is turning to a little girl in disgrace (who is covering her face with her pinafore), and trying to coax her out of her wilfulness.' - The Scotsman 'The most compelling of Mr. Faed’s two works is Where is My Good Little Girl? (187) wherein he has realised in his usual felicitous manner a homely pastoral of rustic child life. A humble matron is seated nursing her infant, while a little three year old, whose back is to the spectator, stands apart by the casement in the sulks.' - News of the World 'Where is my good little girl? By Mr. Thomas Faed, R.A., is in this artist’s best manner; a young and good looking-mother seated in her cottage is turning towards a little girl who is standing with her face in her pinafore, and evidently indulging in a “display of temper.” The mother’s inquiry gives us the title of the picture, which has been painted with exquisite are and skill; the scheme of colour is agreeable, and the pains bestowed upon the smallest accessory is evidenced by the young lady in her “tantrums."'

        Oct. 25, 2020

THOMAS FAED (1826-1900) THE FISHER WOMAN

        Est: $600 - $800

Oil on Canvas attributed to Thomas Faed, RA, HRSA (1826-1900) "The Fisher Woman". In giltwood period frame. In frame measures 20"x251/2"x2". Weight 6 pds. Craquelure, minor inpainting, surface soil. Thomas Faeds paintings of orphans, beggars and street vendors were immensely popular. The 1860s and 70s were Thomas Faed's most productive years. In 1860 Agnew's mounted an exhibition of nine of his works. Such an exhibition was then an unusual tribute to be paid to a living artist.
