JOE FAFARDTHE OPENING #1painted bronze, glass and flourescent light (with light switch), mounted on a wooden basesigned, dated /88 and numbered 1/5 height height 33 ins; 83.8 cms Provenance:Charles Bronfman's Claridge Collection, MontrealLiterature:Nancy Tousley, Joe Fafard: The Bronze Years, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal, 1997, page 51, cat. no. 22, for The Opening illustrated in colour.Note:Perhaps best known for his sculptures of cows, Joe Fafard has maintained a towering influence over the Canadian art world for over forty years.  Born in Saskatchewan in 1942, where he still maintains a studio and foundry, Fafard has often said that his perceptions of the world have been shaped by his upbringing on a farm near the village of Sainte-Marthe, SK. Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s Fafard worked primarily in clay, creating ceramic figurines that depicted members of his family and community.  The insight, humility, and humour of these clay sculptures brought him to prominence in Western Canada early in his career.  By 1983, however, Fafard felt that he had reached the limits of the medium and needed a change to pursue new ideas. The shift he was looking for came in 1984 when he was awarded with a commission from the Toronto Dominion Bank to create a public work for the public plaza on Wellington Street in downtown Toronto.  The Pasture, his winning submission, was his first significant venture in bronze, and after this he took to the medium full time, even opening his own foundry in Pense, Saskatchewan. The Opening, cast early in the life of Fafard's foundry, was created in the midst of a series of portraits of famed artists, among them Cézanne, Renoir, and Van Gogh (c. 1984-1993).  The Opening shows particular semblance to the portrait of a young Picasso, Standing Pablo, also completed in 1988. Holding pipes and posed with feet firmly planted, both figures look out from under their flat caps to make direct contact with the viewer.  In the case of The Opening, the figure may also be perceived to be examining himself, as the frame can also be viewed as a mirror.Sold to benefit Historica Canada.

He had read van Gogh's letters to his brother Theo, and the insight into van Gogh's intense struggle as an artist profoundly affected him. After reading the letters, Fafard stated, "I felt a bit like a novice studying the lives of the saints." This could also apply to the subject of this powerful sculpture, Frida Kahlo, renowned Mexican painter and wife of artist Diego Rivera, whose passion for painting and life transcended the physical suffering she endured from an accident while a teenager. Kahlo often painted self portraits, and her work was a raw and uncompromising expression of the female experience. The power of her images was such that André Breton, initiator of the Surrealist movement, described her art as "a ribbon around a bomb". In this bronze, she wears her customary traditional Mexican clothing, and holds a paintbrush, indicating her dedication to painting. Fafard sought to portray the inner life of the artist and, in Frida, captures a living essence that is arresting.

His was a tumultuous and passionate life - and he was, of course, the husband of Frida Kahlo, the subject of lot 48 in this sale. Rivera was well known internationally, and in 1931 a retrospective of his work was held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It is not surprising that this trail-blazing and charismatic artist would have attracted Joe Fafard while he was working on his series of portraits of artists in his foundry in Pense, Saskatchewan. Terrence Heath writes, "In his portraits of these artists, Joe explores not only their likenesses and the life experiences that have moulded their features, posture and stance, but also the way they painted." In Diego, Fafard embodies Rivera's warmth, stout physicality and confidence, brilliantly capturing a visceral and alive presence in bronze.

Fafard's lifelike sculptures are described by curator Mayo Graham to contain an "...animated, uncanny presence, as much as iconography or description, gives Fafard's figures the sense that they are characters inhabiting a narrative". Like other portraits, "Auguste" encapsulates movement, as if Fafard has captured a moment in a story. Heath's description of Fafard's sculpture of his father, "Mon pere", can also be applied to "Auguste": "There is a certain sense that he is present and could also get up and be absent. The figure has authority, a paterfamilias quality, but there is vulnerability, or hesitancy or perhaps gullibility, in the stance as well. The chair would have welcomed him to recline and relax, but he is perched on the edge, ready to say the next thing, ready to move on." The year "Auguste" was done, Fafard had also done a similar sculpture titled "Renoir," where the nineteenth-century artist is sitting upright rather than leaning forward. As with many other artists depicted, Fafard has continued to sculpt and even draw Pierre-Auguste Renoir throughout his career; art which has been collected and exhibited by many major art institutions such as the National Gallery of Canada, McMichael Canadian Art Collection and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Graham writes that "there is a deep sense that certain of Fafard's figures are effigies as much as portraits... the portraits of Van Gogh, Cezanne, Monet, Renoir and Picasso construe a brotherhood in the history of art". Graham also quotes Fafard: "I feel a bit like a novice studying the lives of the saints". Fafard's humble approach instills his art with a sense of raw expression, as an artist whose ambition is unaffected by easily outdated trends and academic expectations, but rather, simply put, seeks to provide his vision a form.

In Timber, captured on the run, Fafard portrays the grace, agility and intense focus of this fierce creature.

Brickley, Vancouver Joe Fafard began to cast in bronze in 1985, and acquired and renovated his own foundry in Pense, Saskatchewan to have the ultimate freedom to create in this medium. He works on both large-scale commissions and small editions, in themes ranging from political figures and artists to animals, both domestic and wild. Fafard is known for his expert and varied patinas - in this work, the warm browns and oranges of his coyote subject. Fafard has an uncanny ability to imbue his sculptures with a living presence - whether his model is human or animal - and individuality, as defined by the coyote's name. Dominugues's piercing yellow eyes and alert stance, as if the animal's gaze has just been caught by something of great interest, gives the impression that its movement has stopped for only a moment, as in a snapshot. In Dominugues, Fafard has caught the inscrutable essence of this wily and elusive animal. Fafard is one of Canada's most renowned sculptors, and was honoured in 2008 with a major touring exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada.

Brickley, Vancouver Joe Fafard and sculptures of animals have become synonymous with each other over the last few decades. His iconic sculptures can be found across Canada through many important public commissions and are greatly renowned for their animation and unique personalities. Since 2001, Fafard has focused on the horse more than any other animal as his subject. He stated, "When one makes sculptures of horses, one remembers all of that great relationship that humans had with them.....Even today one raises horses only for dressage, the races, for the pleasure of horseback riding. It has become an animal of romance, an animal of pleasure which has lost its utility in the West." Waylon is a majestic example of the domestic horse with his muscular physique - he trots easily forward, his carefully groomed coat gleaming with health. His expression is comfortable - his eyes are quietly alert, one ear is cocked to the side - and his tail softly streams into the wind. Fafard often plays with scale, and Waylon's smaller size makes this work more personal and accessible, while retaining a distinct playfulness.

Fafard first gained renown for his ceramic sculptures of local people and farm animals, then in 1985 began to work in bronze. In the 1980s he began an important series of portraits of well-known artists who were key innovators in the history of Western art. Terrence Heath commented, "Much like the statues of the saints that adorn every Catholic church as benchmarks of spirituality, Joe's portraits of master artists - Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso.....are his personal benchmarks of art." Le petit danseur is an intriguing depiction of Picasso, Fafard having chosen the posture of one foot in the air to indicate that Picasso is about to step into the unknown. However, he is still standing on Greek tradition, represented by the form of a column. As Fafard stated, "I wanted to express the idea that an artist must plunge into the unknown to arrive at new knowledge."

Of all the animals there, he found horses the most exciting, and they were the subject of his earliest drawings. After an extended period in the artist's career when he focused on cows and bulls, the 2001 commission of five life-size galloping steel horses, The Bayshore Horses, renewed the horse as Fafard's muse. Fafard was interested in the history of the horse's symbiotic association with man, and how they transformed from their utilitarian role of the past to "become an animal of romance, an animal of pleasure." Valen, a regal and refined horse, personifies this ideal. Fafard's horses can be read as portraits; they are bestowed with an individuality reinforced by his giving them names. Valen originated from a smaller sculpture entitled Val. Fafard became engrossed with how the scale of a work, when altered, changes the work itself. In Valen, Fafard captures not only the details of the horse's finely rendered physical likeness, but also his personality, his life-like essence.
