Published by Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi in Rome. The first series of the "Nuovo Teatro" appeared for the first time in 1655. The present edition of Part 1 is dated 1665. Part 2 is dated in the literature to circa 1665–1667. Part 3 was published circa 1669–1670. Part 4, engraved by Specchi, is dated 1699. The pontificates of the popes indicated on the title pages provide termini ante quos for dating the series of the "Fontane"; for the series by Falda before 1667, for the series by Venturini before 1689. In the 17th century, Rome was both a pilgrimage destination and a stopover for travelers to Italy. In addition to guides to the holy sites of the Eternal City, there were printed tourist guides to the sights. At the same time, travelers always had the desire to take home views of the places and squares they visited as souvenirs. Falda and Specchi fulfilled this wish in an almost encyclopedic manner: even the fountains were given their own publication. These publications helped to spread architectural ideas throughout Europe. With them, not only the fame of the city and its buildings, but also that of the builders was increased. Ultimately, books like these also show that Piranesi's "Vedute di Roma" did not appear out of nowhere, but were preceded by such earlier view works. The fifteen lots 3075–3089 offer a representative cross-section of the genre of Italian vedute. The first true-to-life views of landscapes and cities appeared in art as early as around 1500. However, the genre experienced its heyday in Italy at the end of the 17th and throughout the 18th century. International tourism to Italy provided a market that was served above all by printed graphic sheets. Mention should be made here first and foremost of the etchings by Antonio Canaletto and Giovanni Battista Piranesi. Canaletto's nephew, Bernardo Bellotto, established the concept of highly realistic city views north of the Alps as well, while Piranesi expanded topographical motifs to include the architectural inventions of the "Carceri". Chronologically, in the selection offered here, the series of important buildings and fountains in Rome, published by the Roman publisher Rossi as early as the 17th century and engraved by Falda, Specchi, and Venturini, form the beginning. The final chord is then set by Luigi Rossini's extensive cycle of views of Rome, which continues Piranesi's major project of the „Vedute di Roma“ into the 19th century. Parchment binding. Good copy with some rare browned leaves and old watermarks affecting only the first few pages. First edition. Giovanni Battista Falda (1643-1678) was a prominent architect and engraver born in Valduggia. Already initiated into the craft in the workshop of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, at just 14 years old he was selected by Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi, the publisher of this work. Rossi commissioned a series of engravings of the fountains of Rome, which were published in the first two parts. Due to the untimely death of that legendary engraver, the remaining parts were executed by another burin artist: Giovanni Francesco Venturini (1650-circa 1710). This creates a work of singular beauty, and today extremely rare on the market.
