MICHAEL FARADAY (1791 - 1867) English chemist and physicist who discovered the properties of electromagnetic induction, and rotation and devised several methods of generating electricity. Fine content A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., "Royal Institution", Dec. 28, 1846, to French chemist Pierre Hippolyte Boutigny (1798-1884), in part: "...Thank you for all your kind communications at Cambridge, and if I do not forget here also. I always think of you and your experiments with great interest. Last June at the close of our Friday evening meetings I gave our members an experimental illustration of your beautiful subject and I shewed them some of the results which you shewed me. I added one which I do not see in your book though it comes near that one made by M. Dumas [French chemist Jean-Baptiste Dumas, 1800-1884] & described on p. 102; by virtue of your spheroidal state I was enabled to free mercury in the red hot crucible with the utmost facility. But the crucible was made (spheroidal) red hot then some ether introduced, then solid carbonic acid, and lastly a metallic capsule holding about an ounce of mercury was dipped into the spheroidal mixture until the mercury was frozen which happened in two or three seconds. It seemed very strange to dip the frozen mercury into the red hot crucible and bring it out frozen. I am not in good condition being under the Surgeon's hands for an affection of the knee; this limits every occupation, even writing...". With integral holograph address leaf, very good condition.

      Michael Faraday

      Est: -

Autograph: Michael Faraday British physicist and chemist (1791–1867) best known for his development of the first dynamo and the discovery of electromagnetic induction. ALS signed “M. Faraday,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 7, Royal Institute of Great Britain letterhead, March 23, 1857. Letter to Professor Miller. In part: “I have just sent a paper to the Royal Society for you. It is from Professor Plichen…It is on magnetocrystallography & contains as he tells me a perfect mathematical theory. When he told me some time ago that he was intending to send a paper to the Royal Society I warned him that it must be original and he tells me that it is so.” Toning to right side on reverse from old mounting remnants, mild toning to front, and rusty clip impression to top border, otherwise fine condition. Considered one of greatest experimenters of his era, Faraday was a self-trained scientist whose greatest claims to fame include the 1821 invention of the dynamo (a device capable of converting electricity to motion) the 1831 discovery of electromagnetic induction, and in 1857—the year this letter was sent—the discovery of the laws of chemical electrodeposition of metals from solutions. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.

Fine A.L.S. "M. Faraday" 3pp, 8vo, Hampton Court, September 20, 1859, to Mr. Crawford in Scotland. Faraday, enamored with his vacation away from England, writes in part: "...Amongst all the recollections that flow in upon my mind now I have returned home, none is more pleasant than those which relate to our visit to you at Glasgow; and I owe very deep thanks to you and your dear wife for the kindness shewed towards us. I scarcely know who to write to in the expression of them; but as my wife is writing to yours, I write to you; I cannot however separate you in this...This morning I have had a letter from her from Dunkold. She speaks of the Glasgow happiness with great pleasure. I hope Mrs. Crawford will tell our friends where we are, i.e. if they feel any interest in our whereabouts...".
