John F.W.C. Farleigh 1900-1965 Where Tides of Grass Break into Foam of Flowers / Swinburne. 1937. Condition A / A-: minor staining in margins. John Farleigh, also known as Frederick William Charles Farleigh, was an English wood-engraver and illustrator. Some of his most notable works were illustrations for by G.B. Shaw and D.H. Lawrence, as well as posters he designed for London County Council Tramways and London Transport. The quote 'Where tides of grass break into foam of flowers' is taken from the poem 'Laus Veneris' (c.1866) by Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909). V&A E.1137-1937, LTM 1983/4/4775.
