Mary Fedden Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1915 - d. 2012

Bold, expressive and imbued with a satisfying tension, Mary Fedden’s kitchen-table still-life paintings feature jugs and vases of flowers rendered in vivid, contrasting colours.

Between 1932 and 1936, Fedden studied under the theatre designer Vladimir Polunin at the Slade School of Art in London, and one of her first paid jobs was producing stage designs for Sadler’s Wells Theatre and the Arts Theatre. During the Second World War, she was commissioned to produce patriotic murals.

She developed her signature still-life style after the war, and admitted to being inspired at various times by the early works of Ben Nicholson, Picasso and Braque. Yet there was also a surreal quality to her art, in which objects were suspended against strangely hallucinatory backgrounds. Unsurprisingly, Fedden was often in demand as an illustrator.

Married to the charismatic printmaker Julian Trevelyan (1910-1988), Fedden had to work hard to get noticed by the English avant-garde, despite exhibiting in solo shows throughout the United Kingdom every year from 1950 until her death.

From 1958 to 1964 she taught at the Royal College of Art, where her pupils included David Hockney and Allen Jones. The artists she counted among her friends included Eileen Agar, Henry Moore, John Piper and Ceri Richards.

In 1992, she was elected to the Royal Academy. ‘I’ve always said my life has been ruled by great luck over small things,’ she said in later life.

§ Mary Fedden O.B.E., R.A., R.W.A. (British 1915-2012) Harbour Cat, 2005 (For RCA Secret) watercolour on paper, laid on postcard (10cm x 15cm (4in x 6in)) Provenance Donated by the Artist to RCA Secret, Royal College of Art, London, where acquired by the current owner. The Royal College of Art’s fundraising exhibition RCA Secret was established in 1994 and was London’s original postcard exhibition. All proceeds from the annual event go to the RCA Fund, which in turn enables the College to offer bursaries to those students who would otherwise not be able to attend its storied classrooms, allowing talented individuals, regardless of their background or financial circumstances, to access a unique educational experience at a formative time in their lives. Past contributors to the exhibition include renowned alumni and friends of the College such as Christopher Bailey, David Bowie, Sir James Dyson, Tracey Emin, Norman Foster, Thomas Heatherwick, Anish Kapoor, Mike Leigh, Stella McCartney, Steve McQueen, Yoko Ono, Zandra Rhodes and Sir Paul Smith. Current students and recent alumni are also invited to contribute – adding to the fascinating mix of styles and responses. However, when the works go on display, all are anonymous – leaving it up to the viewer to decide if the work they like is by an art-world luminary or a rising star. Some are quite obvious (a few artists miss the memo and sign their works on the front); the majority are not. Part of this is due to there being no limitation on medium: from photography and collage, to drawing, painting and even sculpture and embroidery, the only requirement is that all artworks should be postcard-sized. To buy the works, members of the public register to gain a buyer’s ID – after which, it’s first come, first served (capped at four works per buyer until the very last days of the show). This wonderful collection [lots 292-300] was put together by possibly the most dedicated follower of RCA Secret, who was first in line every year between 2002 and 2018 and as such it represents the best of what the exhibition is about. There are works by major names such as Grayson Perry, Yinka Shonibare, Mimmo Paladino, Maggi Hambling, David Bailey and Richard Wentworth, mixed in with jewels by artists less well known, all with something in common, that particular collaborative and open-hearted spirit of the exhibition.

Yorkshire LS29 9JG: ‘Thank you so much for your letter & photograph. How very nice of you to write & tell me you still enjoy my painting so much. It is lovely to have fans & I’m delighted – yours sincerely Mary Fedden’ In spite of the diversity of Mary Fedden’s subject matter, still lifes remained her ‘real love’, and she returned to them repeatedly. She treated the subject of artichokes and artichoke flowers in a cluster of oil paintings executed during the 1950s and 1960s; for example Artichokes, 1957, oil on board, signed and dated, sold at Sotheby’s, London, 12 October, 1988, lot 233; Artichoke Flowers, signed and dated 1959, oil on board, sold at Sotheby’s, 25 May, 2011, lot 122; Still Life with Artichokes, signed and dated 1962, sold at Bonham’s, London, 25 March 2003, 2002, lot 82; and Still Life with Artichokes and Coffee Grinder, 1965, oil on canvas, signed and dated, sold at Sotheby’s, London, 1 December 1999, lot 62. The present still life stands out amongst them, as it combines the exuberant reds and pinks of the chequered cloth and sober browns of the artichoke flowers to rich effect. Fedden also combines both motifs in a Still Life of .... combines both the chequered cloth and artichoke flowers; and the chequered cloth reappears in The Chequered Cloth of 1976, oil on board, signed and dated, which sold at Bonham’s, London, 24 November 2021, lot 59.

The present subject was one of the most photographed boats on the Suffolk coast: a traditional wooden fishing smack. On its stern are the words (abbreviated with artistic licence) Fred’s Dunwich, Lowestoft. Contemporary photos show that the full name was Fred’s Last, Dunwich, Lowestoft, and was, according to Jane Hamilton, manager of Dunwich Museum, 'a longstanding feature on Dunwich beach', describing the boats as 'good examples of post-war inshore boats used at Dunwich.' Last is a common name in Suffolk. According to Elizabeth Walne, a qualified genealogist based in East Anglia 'You can’t go far in Suffolk without bumping into one'. Although Jane Hamilton quips that '...as it's Fred's Last, more likely it was 'Fred's last boat'.' Either way, under the serenity of a full moon, Mary Fedden captured the hulking form of a rapidly vanishing way of life in which you can almost smell the fresh seabreeze.
