Orpheus designs, 1953, pencil, pen, black and blue ink, and white bodycolour on various papers, a group of 35 stage set and costume designs, comprising 18 costume designs and 17 set designs, the costume designs including those of Orfeo, Euridice and 'God of love - Adele Leigh', each annotated in pen or pencil, that for Orfeo also with annotation regarding costume colour, also a female costume of a dancer carry a small lyre on her shoulder, adhered top and bottom to card backing with 'Orfeo 1953' in ink manuscript to upper left of card, another female costume is annotated 'Act I sc. 1 & 2', and another 'for fat men'(?), the set designs are mostly of a backdrop or set comprising three gigantic lyres, in various forms, some sketches appear to be considering whether to arrange the lyres side-by-side or in a diagonal line, or whether to have a single central lyre with large columns to each side, one design features three gigantic harps, another shows a single huge lyre at the top of a flight of stairs, with a tiny figure of a ballerina at the foot of the lyre, other sketches are ideas for different lyre-forms, and one apparently shows a tomb-like object, some of each type of sketch (costume and set design) are annotated on the verso with directions such as 'bottom right' or 'upper middle', a couple of versos have 'Ashton' written in pencil, most have remnants of adhesive tape and associated staining to the top corners (probably added by the artist), some cockling to those on tracing paper, one costume design with 4cm closed tear to top blank area, and one with small loss near corner, one set design with top left corner reattached (probably by the artist or Ashton) and tiny corner loss, another with 4.5 cm horizontal tear to top left corner (again with old repair), one with small loss to lower edge, each approximately 21 x 15 cm (8 1/4 x 6 ins) and smaller, contained together in a brown Victoria & Albert Museum postal envelope, with contemporary ink manuscript 'Ashton' and in large red ink letters, 'Orpheo [sic] - Fedorovitch' in black QTY: (35) NOTE: Provenance: From the estate of Martyn Thomas (Frederick Ashton's partner), thence by descent to the present owner. Martyn Thomas was the partner of ballet dancer and choreographer Frederick Ashton (1904-1988). Orpheus is the 'lost' opera that Fredrick Ashton produced in 1953 for the Covent Garden Opera and Sadler's Wells Ballet. Based on Gluck's opera Orfeo ed Euridice, the opera starred Kathleen Ferrier in the title role, with Veronica Dunne as Eurydice and Adele Leigh as Amor. Sadly the opera was doomed: Kathleen Ferrier, who was known to be suffering from cancer at the time, injured herself on the second night and never performed in public again. Meanwhile Sophie Fedorovitch herself, a long-time friend of and collaborator with Frederick Ashton, tragically died from a gas leak in her house, on the day of the dress rehearsal. Apparently after her death, Ashton wrote: It is impossible for me to write about Sophie Fedorovitch without the deepest emotion, for in her death I lost not only my dearest friend but my greatest artistic collaborator and adviser (Simon Fleet, editor, Sophie Fedorovitch: Tributes and Attributes. The artist was part of the Seven and Five Society, which from 1925 became a vital Modernist group of artist working in inter-war Britain. Other participants included Ben Nicholson, Jessica Dismorr, Barbara Hepworth, Frances Hodgkins and David Jones. She later became heavily involved in costume and theatre design, which was later the subject of an exhibition at the V & A Museum, London.

In her 2012 article in Research in Dance Education, Elizabeth McLean's view was that Fedorovitch had a "formative influence" on British ballet design of the 1930s and 1940s, and that she should be considered the equal of her contemporary, Christian Bérard. Horoscope is a ballet created in 1937 by Frederick Ashton (1904-1988) with music by Constant Lambert (1905-1951) and costume design by Sophie Fedorovitch. It was premiered by Vic-Wells Ballet at Sadler's Wells Theatre in January 1938, and starred Michael Somes as The Young Man and Margot Fonteyn as The Young Woman. Provenance: From the estate of Martyn Thomas (partner of Frederick Ashton), thence by descent to the present owner.
