    BEATRICE FENTON (AMERICAN, 1887-1983), BRONZE FIGURE OF GORILLA, "BAMBOO" signed and dated on reverse of base 'B. FENTON 56'; This is a portrait of a gorilla from the Philadelphia Zoo. Note: Beatrice Fenton was an American "animalier" sculptor born in Philadelphia. She began drawing animals at the Philadelphia zoo, and her father showed her work to Thomas Eakins, who was a family friend. He suggested that she take a sculpture class to improve her drawing skills, and in 1903 she enrolled in a class taught by A. Stirling Calder. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and taught at Moore College of Art and Design. She received the George D. Widener Memorial Gold medal in 1922 for her "Seaweed Fountain" and was a member of the National Sculpture Society. A cast of "Seaweed Fountain" is in Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina - h:6.75 in.
