Ferguson Anderson Galleries 1918 Catalogue note: Riobamba is the capital of the Chimborazo district in Ecuador; it lies on the Chambo river. Ferguson studied in Albany, New York City, Paris, and Venice. He visited many countries on sketching tours; he was particularly interested in Italian and Mexican views. In 1871, Ferguson followed the example of Frederic Edwin Church and sought his subject matter in South America. From the base of Santiago, Chile, he passed three years traveling and painting around western South America, favoring Peru. He apparently returned to New York just at the end of 1873; there he set up a studio at 8 Astor Place, where he displayed his finished paintings of the spectacular South American scenery, and began to produce more works from the trove of sketches he had amassed during his travels. Ferguson exhibited in every National Academy annual from 1879 through the year of his death, excepting only 1883 and 1892. At first his contributions were almost entirely drawn from his studies made in South America, Egypt, and Venice. In 1884 Mexico was added to his repertoire of subjects (suggesting where he may have been there in 1883). (Source: National Academy online). Born in 1842 in Glens Falls, New York, romantic landscape painter Henry Ferguson moved to Albany in the 1860s and took study with landscape painter Homer Dodge Martin and historical genre-figure painter George Henry Boughton. Circa the late 1870s, Ferguson moved to New York City; however, his romantic nature led to extensive travels in Mexico, South America (crossing the Andes numerous times), Europe, Egypt, and the Mediterranean. A lovely facet to many of his “foreign” paintings is the capture of the local architecture of the places he visited. After his many art “excursions”, Ferguson returned to New York City where opened a studio. His landscapes included romantic views of the Hudson River, the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. He would later provide conservation/restoration services to galleries and fine art collectors. Ferguson was a member of the National Academy of Design (1867-1900) and Century Association (1879-1911). He exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association (1864-1884); Boston Art Club (1881-1890); Art Institute of Chicago (1888—1889, 1891); National Academy of Design (1867-1900); and Academy of the Fine Arts (1888, 1891).

"Study from Nature, Venice, 1878", depicting fishing boats at anchor, the Island of San Lazzaro in the distance, oil on academy board, signed and titled verso, with label from exhibition and Italian export wax seal, housed in the original gold cove matched corner frame, with name tag, OS: 16 3/4" x 24 3/4", SS: 10 1/2" x 18 1/2". Cleaned and revarnished, retouched along bottom edge. Born in Glens Falls, NY, Ferguson is counted among the Hudson River School of painters, but is equally known for his South American (Chile) paintings done right after the Civil War and his views recorded on trips to Venice and Egypt executed from the late 1870s into the 90s. He was based in New York City from 1873 onward.

Henry Augustus Ferguson (American, 1845-1911) . Oil on board. Signed, lower right. Depicts a small waterfall in a forest with buildings in the distance. In an ornate gold leaf frame. Born in Glen Falls, New York, Ferguson later became part of the Hudson River School painters. He is known for his romantic landscapes. In his later life he became a restorer. MEASUREMENTS: 18-1/2" x 13-5/8". Overall with frame 28" x 22-1/2". CONDITION: Minor paint loss at top edge with some wear to the frame.

A river is seen in the foreground with tree and sandy banks. Signed lower left. Housed in a period gold molded wood frame with carved gold liner. Old pen inscribed card with notes regarding the painting and its appraisal by Sotheby's Parke Bernet is attached to back. SIZE: 8-1/2" x 15-1/2". CONDITION: Craquelure with minor inpainting.
