Signiert und datiert. 2022. -- -- New York als Schmelztiegel der Kulturen bietet ein Feuerwerk an kulinarischen Genüssen aus aller Herren Länder. Wer Manhattan von Norden nach Süden durchstreift, trifft auf sämtliche Delikatessen, die die Präsenz der unterschiedlichen Ethnien in der Stadt widerspiegeln. Von Yorkville, dem alten Viertel der Deutschen rund um die 86. Straße (East) mit dem Heidelberg Restaurant und "Schaller's Stube" Wurst Bar gelangt man nach Midtown, wo sich neben feinsten japanischen Restaurants auch die legendären amerikanischen Steakhäuser wie Smith & Wollensky oder das Palm Restaurant befinden. Weiter südlich an der Lower East Side findet man jüdische Spezialitäten, etwa die traditionellen "Knish" bei Jonah Schimmels Knish Bakery oder die gigantischen Pastrami Sandwiches bei Katz's Delicatessen, berühmt auch als Drehort von "When Harry met Sally". Die 1920 gegründete "Vesuvio Bakery" in Little Italy stammt noch aus der Zeit, in der sich die meisten der süditalienischen Einwanderer um die Mulberry Street im Süden Manhattans in kleinen Wohnungen drängten. Auch Robert de Niro und Martin Scorsese wuchsen dort auf. Heute besteht Little Italy nurmehr aus zwei Straßen, nachdem sich das angrenzende Chinatown, das wohl exotischste Viertel immer mehr weiter ausgebreitet hat. Der Duft von Gewürzen liegt dort in der Luft; Dim Sum und Nudelsuppen sind an jeder Ecke zu haben. (2008). -- -- Der New Yorker Künstler Max Ferguson, der zunächst Filmanimation an der New York University studierte, setzte sich während eines Auslandsaufenthaltes in Amsterdam mit der holländischen Malerei des Goldenen Zeitalters auseinander. Mehr noch als die technische Virtuosität der Alten Meister bewunderte er deren Fähigkeit, mit den Mitteln der Malerei Alltägliches semantisch aufzuladen, dem Profanen gar „Sakramentales“ zu verleihen. Seine Herangehensweise wurzelt in traditionellen Techniken und seine Werke entstehen über Monate hinweg in einem geduldigen und sorgfältigen Prozess. Die Bezeichnung Fotorealismus mag, wenn man sie allein auf das Technische bezieht, zutreffend sein, greift aber für Fergusons künstlerischen Anspruch zu kurz. Denn neben der ästhetisch-visuellen Qualität seiner Werke ist die Empathie für das Dargestellte von zentraler Bedeutsamkeit. -- Für sein in Grisaille gehaltenes Gemälde hat sich Ferguson den berühmten Fischmarkt an der Lower East Side auserkoren, den Fulton Fish Market, der 1822 gegründet nach Tokio der größte Fischmarkt der Welt ist. Für die Händler öffnet der Markt Montag bis Freitag von 2 bis 7 Uhr. Ferguson schildert in seinem Gemälde das geschäftige Treiben der Händler vor der Fischhalle. Die Nacht wird hier zum Tag. Die grellen Flutlichter erleuchten die Ladenzone des Fischmarktes und lassen die nasse Asphaltfläche wie spiegelndes Glatteis wirken. Die Männer, warm eingepackt, transportieren und verladen die gekühlte Ware. Beim Betrachten des Bildes kann man sich nur zur gut vorstellen, was für eine Geräuschkulisse hier herrscht, das Stimmengewirr der Halle, das Rumpeln der zu verladenen Kisten, die An- und Abfahrt der Fahrzeuge.
