James Fetherolf Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1925 - d. 1994

Before branching out on his own as an  artist, James Fetherolf worked as a matte-painter for Fox Studios, followed by a stint at Walt Disney Productions. By 1969, however, his original landscapes and seascapes were selling so well that he left the film industry to devote time to his new career.

James Fetherolf's paintings are distinctive because of their topographical accuracy and his keen observance of weather patterns. He created the clouds and skies while the paint was wet, a method known as wet on wet, or alla prima. The goal of James Fetherolf's paintings is to make viewers feel like they have walked into the work. The value of James Fetherolf's prints grew as the the prices on his oil paintings increased. James A. Fetherolf (American, 1925-1994) Painting. Title - Snow Capped Mountain Scene. Oil on canvas painting. Measures 12 inches high, 16 inches wide. Frame measures 21 inches high, 25 inches wide. Signed lower right, Fetherolf ‘63. In good condition. From Askart.com: A seascape, skyscape, and landscape painter, James Fetherolf (1925-1994) created works with fine detailing, a skill he likely learned as a background artist for Hollywood film studios. He was born in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, graduated from Syracuse University and then moved to California in 1949 with a goal of becoming an actor. He struggled for five years to find work in that capacity and at the same time worked for Twentieth Century Fox Studios as a background painter. In 1957, he went to Walt Disney Productions and later returned full time to Fox Studios. He credited the work at Disney as being educational because he was tied to deadlines and very realistic depictions. His work appeared in classic films such as Zorro, Pollyanna, Mary Poppins, and Third Man on the Mountain. Fetherolf turned to fine art painting, inspired by a trip to a local art gallery where he decided he could paint as well if not better than the artists producing the work he saw. He began by painting seascapes, which had a strong market, and this subject as well as landscapes became so popular that he left the film industry to devote himself to oil painting. His paintings are so realistic that individual timbers are discernible inside a distant barn and cacti on the horizon are individually painted. His paintings of billowing clouds are also signature works, and he achieved the energetic, billowing quality by working fast on the painting of the clouds, completing them in one sitting. Fetherolf received seven gold medals from the Franklin Mint Gallery of American Art and also was selected to paint the centerpiece work, America! America! for the Mint's America the Beautiful series. From Kavanaughgallery.com: Deceased artist James Fetherolf worked to create the illusion of being able to walk into his paintings. This is very evident in the original oils. Fetherolf began working in art as a matte painter for several major movie studios. His work appeared in such classic films as Zorro, Pollyanna, Mary Poppins, and Third Man on the Mountain. In 1969 he changed his focus to fine art and continued to create beautiful land and seascapes until his death in 1994.

BIOGRAPHY: Landscape painter James Fetherolf’s work is noted for its precise rendering of fine detail, a skill he may have mastered during his years as a background artist for several Hollywood film studios. Fetherolf was born in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, in 1925. He attended Syracuse University; and after graduating in 1949 he moved to California, hoping for an acting career. For five years, while struggling to develop his acting career, Fetherolf worked as a part-time matte artist for Twentieth Century Fox Studios. The difficulty of finding acting jobs eventually convinced him that his future in the arts lay in painting. He then returned to Fox full-time. In 1957, he moved to Walt Disney Productions. Fetherolf claims that his years at Disney were educational in several ways — partly because the standards of perfection were very high, and partly because his work was tied to deadlines. He produced detailed paintings on glass, usually three or four feet in size, of cities or landscape scenes. These “matte shots” were later combined with live action. His work appeared in such classic films as Zorro, Pollyanna, Mary Poppins, and Third Man on the Mountain. After a visit to a local art gallery, during which he decided he could do at least as well as the artists represented, Fetherolf turned to the fine arts. He began by painting seascapes, which were enthusiastically received. These and his landscapes had become so popular by 1969 that he left the film industry and devoted himself to oil painting. The dramatic quality in Fetherolf’s paintings is his ability to capture the reaction of light a quality most evident in the work of the great landscape artists of the nineteenth century. His paintings are also distinguished by clarity of detail. For example, individual timbers are discernible inside a distant barn; and cacti on the horizon are individually painted. He is also known for the moist, billowing quality of the clouds in his large skies, as in “Spirit of Summer” (date unknown, Simic Galleries), a quality he achieves by working on the sky in each painting in one sitting while the paint is wet. Fetherolf has the exceptional ability to bring the viewer into the scene in the paintings he creates. The viewer can feel the warmth of the sun; the coolness of the shadows; the approaching storm; the first spring rain; and the early snow clinging to buildings, trees, and the land. Fetherolf has received seven gold medals from the Franklin Mint Gallery of American Art, and was selected to paint the centerpiece work, America! America!, for the Mint’s “America the Beautiful” series. His work was also represented in the Bicentennial exhibition of the R. W. Norton Museum in Shreveport, LouisianaMatte artist Jim Fetherolf.
