Feuchère s'inscrit parfaitement dans ce courant artistique lorsqu'il donne à voir au Salon de 1834 ce Satan et la paire de vases qui l'accompagne. La figure de l'ange déchu est inspirée de La Mélancolie de Dürer dont Feuchère possédait une épreuve. « Le coude au genou, le menton dans la main, [rêvant] au pauvre sort humain», le Satan de Feuchère adopte la pose du poète romantique que reprendront Carpeaux et Rodin pour Ugolin et Le Penseur. Si le Satan fut principalement édité dans la taille intermédiaire de 35 cm, il est beaucoup plus rare de rencontrer notre modèle édité en petite taille. JEAN-JACQUES FEUCHERE (FRENCH, 1807-1852), ATTRIBUTED, BRONZE VASE / GARNITURE, cast-bronze, assembled of several pieces, depicting a winged demonic male figure grasping the foliate rim of an ewer-like vessel adorned with spread-winged bats around the body, the base depicting a coiled snake, the whole resting on a round marble base atop a later-added turned wood base which was likely added when the piece was converted to a lamp. Retains the likely original surface. Mid 19th century. 14 5/8" HOA, 5" D base.

JEAN JACQUES FEUCHÈRE (France, 1807-1852). Pair of vases. Gilded bronze. Porphyry base. Measurements: 34 x 8,5 x 10 cm (each). Magnificent pair of gilded bronze vases made by Jean-Jacques Feuchère, one of the most singular sculptors and bronze artists of French Romanticism. Active in the first half of the 19th century, he stood out both for his monumental production and for his refined decorative works of fantastic character. Among his best known works are the relief Le Pont d'Arcole for the Arc de Triomphe in Paris (1833-1834), the Joan of Arc for the Hôtel de Ville in Rouen, sculptures for La Madeleine, the Mary Stuart in the Luxembourg garden (Queens of France series), as well as the famous Vase aux chauves-souris (1833, Musée du Louvre). The present vases fully reflect this romantic and fantastic imagery: winged figures crown the ovoid bodies, while coiled serpents and bats in relief enrich the surface with a bold and expressive repertoire. They reveal a singular ornamental repertoire, in keeping with the neo-Gothic taste that distinguished Feuchère's production. The contrast between the luster of gold and the deep tone of porphyry, a favorite combination of collectors under Louis Philippe and Napoleon III for its evocative air of "recovered antiquity", is also remarkable. More than utilitarian objects, these pieces are conceived as ornamental sculptures, an outstanding example of the high technical and creative level of 19th century Parisian artistic bronze.

With pendulum. Porcelain enameled and glazed dial. Signed on plate and dial "Vittoz à Paris". Measurements: 26 x 17 x 19 cm.(sculpture; 30 x 34 x 24 cm.(clock); 51 x 19 x 14,5 cm.(garnish). Important garnished clock, decorated with a sculptural group signed by the bronze artist Jean Jacques Feuchère, representing a Bacchic theme with two putti playing with bunches of grapes. The group adorns the clock, while two other children's sculptures assume the role of Atlanteans in the fittings, holding fruit motifs on their heads. The bases are of fluted marble and have gilded bronze applications, profusely worked with rocaille motifs, bunches of grapes, scrolls and festoons. The dial is made of enameled porcelain, which is visible in the windows with Roman numerals, while the rest of the dial is made of gilded bronze, finely embossed and decorated with ovals. Jean-Jacques Feuchère was a French sculptor, disciple of Jean-Pierre Cortot. Among his pupils was Jacques-Léonard Maillet. Between 1844 and 1847 the Fountain of Saint-Sulpice Square was built. The project was built by the architect Louis Visconti (1791-1853). A 19TH CENTURY BRONZE FIGURE OF A MANDOLIN PLAYER A 19TH CENTURY BRONZE FIGURE OF A MANDOLIN PLAYER in the manner of Jean-Jacques Feuchère (French, 1807-1852), the seated figure with a net in one hand and a mandolin in the other, seated on an upturned basket of fish, on a naturalistic base, dark brown patination, unsigned, mounted on a black marble rectangular plinth, 23cm high x 18cm wide The quaity of casting and chasing, the fine modelling and subject are all indicative of an early to mid 19th century date, and are features that the work shares with that of the French sculptor Feuchère, for example his bronze of a seated bagpipe player.

A FIRST HALF 19TH CENTURY BRONZE FIGURE OF A MANDOLIN PLAYER A FIRST HALF 19TH CENTURY BRONZE FIGURE OF A MANDOLIN PLAYER in the manner of Jean-Jacques Feuchère (French, 1807-1852), the seated figure with a net in one hand and a mandolin in the other, seated on an upturned basket of fish, on a naturalistic base, dark brown patination, unsigned, mounted on a black marble rectangular plinth, 23cm high x 18cm wide The quaity of casting and chasing, the fine modelling and subject are all indicative of an early to mid 19th century date, and are features that the work shares with that of the French sculptor Feuchère, for example his bronze of a seated bagpipe player.

Jean-Jacques Feuchère, (French, 1807-1852) Satan, 1833, patinated bronze, signed, with foundry, E. de Labroue & Cie, plaster version was exhibited at the salon in 1834, his bronze in 1835. Height 9 in. (22.86 cm.), Width 3.5 in. (8.89 cm.) cf. Jean-Jacques Feuchère deemed a master of the weird, died prematurely at the height of his fame. His most famous work, the melancholic Satan was exhibited for the first time at the 1834 Salon in its plaster version. The bronzes began production the following year. Feuchère depicted the demon as an almost human creature punished for making the wrong choice, whose arrogance brought about his fall. Echoing the 19th century’s Gothic Romanticism, its references are to be found in Dante’s Inferno, Milton’s Paradise Lost and Goethe’s Faust.
