  • Mel Fillerup Painting - "Mother and Daughter"
    Jan. 19, 2023

Mel Fillerup Painting - "Mother and Daughter"

    Est: $600 - $900

Mel Fillerup (American, 1924-2010). "Mother and Daughter" oil on canvas, n.d. Signed on lower left. A beautiful painting of an indigenous woman and her daughter, both wrapped in matching red blankets embellished with blue motifs and wearing scarves around their heads. Mother and daughter are sitting on the sandy earth of the Southwest, gazing into the distance as the sun shines upon them. This composition, with an aura of golden light surrounding the mother and daughter, symbolizes the honor and respect that Native peoples have for mothers as the givers of life who teach their children how to navigate life's journey. In addition to honoring the power of women to give birth and nurture their cultures, many tribes are matrilineal and respect female leadership. Size: 15.875" L x 11.875" W (40.3 cm x 30.2 cm) Mel Fillerup was a native of Wyoming and practiced law for 20 years before he decided to pursue art full-time. His art has been featured in American Artist Magazine, Southwest Art Magazine, the Audubon Wildlife Art Show, and the Buffalo Bill Art Show. In addition, he was among the first artists represented by the Big Horn Galleries in Cody, Wyoming. Mel Fillerup worked in oil, watercolor, as well as gouache, and his art was very much inspired by the American West and Native American peoples. Provenance: Private Boulder, Colorado, USA collection, acquired between 1980-1990 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
