Formed in stoneware and delicately incised, the surface carries imagery of Peetharr (the Willy Wagtail) and Pharra (the frog), alongside the date palm with elements drawn from a story originating in the Weipa region of Cape York. The narrative speaks of boundaries, relationships and the interconnected roles of animal companions within Country. Works of this kind were not simply aesthetic objects, but held an intimate cultural and personal function. These 'eggs' were acquired by young women seeking to conceive, accompanied by the artist's own quiet guidance and knowledge. This work dates between 1982-1988, a formative period in Thancoupie's practice following her early exhibitions in Sydney. It is likely that Dame Marie Bashir acquired the work directly from the artist during this time. Bashir and Margaret Tuckson took Thancoupie to dinner after an opening in Sydney as a small but telling gesture that reflects the warmth of these early encounters between artist and collector. As noted by Jennifer Isaacs, Thancoupie's ceramics are "not simply vessels, but carriers of story, spirit and cultural memory."
