Focht around 1925, an exceptional example of the concepts that ruled Art Deco sculpture at that time: movement, modernity, sports boom and artistic innovation. The work represents the famous French aviator by means of a bust of strong expressive tension, in which the raised face and the gaze directed upwards underline his heroic and pioneering dimension. The treatment of the bronze combines a naturalistic modeling of the face with a composition of allegorical character, marked by aerodynamic forms and staggered planes, elements that allude directly to the universe of aviation. The greenish patina accentuates the volumes and adds visual depth to the piece. Frédéric C. Focht trained with the sculptor Falguière and soon gained recognition at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he exhibited at the age of 21 and received a Medal of Honor. Fascinated by the link between the human figure, speed and modern machines, he developed a production especially linked to the Art Deco imaginary of aviation and technical progress. His bronzes from the 1920s and 1930s are among the most significant creations of this aesthetic.

Bronze of the Art Deco period representing a skier in full descent, leaning looking for the moment of maximum tension. The feminine figure, with scarf to the wind, projects torso and knees to the front, while the sticks extended behind her back and the agitated hair underline the thrust of the descent. The composition integrates figure and landscape into a single block, with the base in the form of a snowy cornice becoming an essential part of the work. The title evokes Zermatt, the legendary Swiss alpine town at the foot of the Matterhorn, whose conquest in 1865 made the Alps an iconic destination for modern sport and travel. In the 1920s and 1930s, skiing had become a symbol of distinction and avant-garde, and Art Deco artists incorporated it into their imagery as an expression of speed and mastery of the body over nature. Frédéric Focht, trained in the workshop of sculptor Falguière, gained early recognition at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he exhibited at the age of 21 and received a Medal of Honor. His work is characterized by a fascination with movement, speed and the human figure in tension with technical modernity.

The sculpture, made by the French artist Frédéric Focht, is a successful expression of the ideal of dynamism characteristic of the Art Deco period. Executed in patinated bronze and mounted on a Belgian black marble base, the work is characterized by a powerful sense of movement. In the composition, a half-naked female figure projects forward on a sort of projectile, a symbol of speed and progress. The woman, with her body extended in a gesture of impulse, seems to merge with the machine. The figure emerges from a foamy sea swell, modeled with vigor. This resource gives the work a marked sense of strength. The greenish patina finish highlights the hallmarks, giving a sense of depth.

Measurement: 40 x 51 x 18,5 cm. Jean Mermoz was a famous French aviator who lived in the 20th century. Mermoz was one of the most celebrated pilots of his time and he is known for his contributions to aviation and for founding Air France. In 1933, Mermoz was appointed General Inspector by Air France. Mermoz was known for skilled and daring flights across Europe, Africa and South America before his disappearance during a flight across the South Atlantic in 1936. Frédéric C. Focht studied under the sculptor Falguiere and his remarkable talent was recognized early in his career. At the age of 21, he exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français and won the coveted Medal of Honour. Focht was fascinated by the link between human form and stylized machines and his bronzes depicting speed gods evolving into aircraft. Frédéric C. Focht responsible for some of the most significant Art Deco bronzes of the 1920s and 1930s.
