John Henry Foley RA RHA (1818-1874) INO AND BACCHUS, 1851 bronze signed and dated front left h:12.50  w:19.50 d:9.50 in. Dimensions of base: 1 by 22 by 11in. In 1834 the sixteen-year old John Henry Foley left his native Dublin for London, following in the footsteps of his elder brother Edward, already established at the sculpture workshop of the celebrated Mr Behnes. He enrolled in the school of the Royal Academy and quickly won a studentship for ten years with The Death of Abel. This piece and Innocence, perhaps inspired by his sister Martha, were exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1839 to great acclaim. Foley's talent was recognised by the influential Art Journal. The following year Ino and Bacchus was exhibited, to even greater acclaim. In both subject matter and style it is a neo-classical piece. That is to say it imitates the art of ancient Greece and Rome. The infant Bacchus lies on his back, smiling, reaching for the bunch of grapes dangled above him by the bare- breasted Ino who lies, smiling, at his side and leans over him. The naturalness, charm and wit of the piece affected all who saw it. Prince Albert, the Queen's consort, was enthusiastic.Francis Egerton, Earl of Ellesmere, commissioned a marble copy for his gallery at Bridgewater House. This poet-politician had inherited property worth £90,000 a year and a fabulous collection of paintings. He was sworn to the privy councils of both Britain and Ireland. He translated French and German literature - he was London's equivalent of Macaenas, Rome's great patron of the Arts.Ino and Bacchus marked a turning point in the career of the twenty-two year old from Montgomery Street, Dublin, (Now Foley Street, just north of Talbot Street.) Son of Jesse Foley, glass-blower turned grocer, and Eliza Byrne, from Wicklow. It launched him upon a career-path that led to the heart of Victorian society and major commissions for projects across the imperial globe from Galway to Calcutta. At first sight, Ino and Bacchus offers a domestic scene that might be set anywhere from Moycullen to Mayfair. Foley and Egerton knew there was more to it. Around the couch upon which the figures lie is a kind of frieze displaying leaves, fruit and faces from the pantheon of classical gods. This reminds us that the woman and child in whose play we delight are not figures from a back garden in Kensington but from the harsh, complicated milieu of Greek mythology, which has little to offer in the way of innocence. Ino was one of four daughters of Cadmus, founder of Thebes. She married Athamas, king of Boeotia, when his first spouse Neplele, the cloud goddess, having given birth to Phrixus and Helle, returned to the sky. Ino bore Athamas two sons, Learchus and Melicertes but she was jealous of her stepchildren and plotted their death...Bacchus (Dionysus in his Greek expression) was the son of Ino's sister Semele by Zeus (God-the-father in the Greek pantheon). Ino's nursing Bacchus angered Hera, wife and sister of Zeus. She persuaded Tisiphone, a fury from Hell, to attack Athamas and Ino and drive them mad. Athamas, convinced that Ino and her babies were a lioness and two cubs, tore Learchus from Ino's arms and flung him against a wall. Ino, still holding Melicertes, climbed a cliff near the water and leapt into the sea. But, Aphrodite, Goddess of Love, called on Poseidon, God of the Sea, to change mother and son into sea-creatures...Bacchus, God of Wine (trademark the grape), gives his name in this, its Latinate, form to the Dionysiac orgies - bacchanalia - that accompanied his worship. The ceremonies of Bacchus were marked by ecstatic abandon and included drunkenness, wild dancing and the dismemberment of wild animals. Maenads (female followers of Bacchus) became possessed by the wanton spirit of the God. With satyrs (preternatural male followers of the same) they sang, danced, played music, drank wine and existed in almost perpetual state of sexual excitement. Rome banned bacchanalia in 186 BC. (1)The story of these essential figures of Greek mythology has been told many times in different literatures and represented many times in various ways in the visual arts tradition of Europe. A plaster-cast of the model can be found in the permanent collection of the Royal Dublin Society. Ronan Sheehan, January 2015 Footnote: 1. The mythological data given here is drawn from The Oxford Guide to Classical Mythology in Art. Ronan Sheehan is author of Foley's Asia: A Sketchbook, Lilliput Press, Dublin 1999.

Hamilton McCormick Mansion, Chicago, Illinois, offered without reserve Note: A staple of Chicago's dining scene since 1974, Lawry's The Prime Rib has become intertwined with the landmark status of its location in the McCormick Mansion. Contributing to the building's legacy of hosting, inaugurated by its original owners L. Hamilton McCormick and Constance Plummer McCormick and followed by the transformation of the private home into a nightclub, then restaurant and puppet theater, Lawry's The Prime Rib made the McCormick Mansion its first satellite location outside of its base in California. Returning the home's architecture to its original English manor taste with a modern sense after having been remodeled by intermediate owners, Lawry's The Prime Rib established itself as a worthy steward of the mansion. Following its closure in December of 2020, many of the furnishings that shaped the restaurant's ambiance for longtime customers are featured throughout this auction.

Foley Sc, London 1867'', later inscribed on the socle ''Baronet MP born Nov. 1798, died 1868'' Benjamin Lee Guinness (1798-1868) The 3rd son of Arthur Guinness and Anne Lee, he joined the eponymous brewery at the age of 16, and he was in sole control by 1858. He was an exemplary employer and modernised the plant. By creating a system of commission agents his porter, the famous ''Dublin black stuff'' became a house-hold word world-wide, and the Guinness family became immensely rich. A devout man with a sense of social duty he undertook serious charitable works, continued by his sons, and restored St. Patricks cathedral at his own expense (some £150,000) by 1865. In his public life he was Lord Mayor of Dublin 1851 and as a conservative unionist was M.P. for Dublin City 1865-1868. Even after having set-up numerous charitable trusts his personal estate of £1,100,000 was the largest probated will seen in Ireland. His main beneficiary being his son Arthur Edward, later Lord Ardilaun who inherited St. Anne's, Clontarf and Ashford Castle, Co. Galway. The town house 80 St. Stephens Green was inherited by the younger brother Edward Cecil to whom Lord Ardilaun sold his shares in the brewery and who in 1886 floated Guinness on the stock market when subscriptions reached an unprecedented £100 million and more. Provenance: Lady Ardilaun and by inheritance J.H. Foley also executed in bronze the life size seated figure of Benjamin Guinness outside St. Patrick's

Strickland, p357-365 Born in Dublin, the son of a grocer, John Henry Foley entered the Royal Dublin Society Schools in 1833 and subsequently the Royal Academy Schools from 1835, studying under Richard Westmacott (1775-1856). He exhibited there from 1839 and first attracted attention at the R.A. in 1840 with his ''Innocence'' and ''Bacchus'', showing the influence of Etienne Maurice Falconet (1716-1791). He was to carry on producing works in this genre, culminating in ''Youth at the Stream''. These idealised sculptures are delicately executed and elegantly attenuated showing a Mannerist influence. The Art Union (later the Art Journal), Foley's most consistent critic and champion, considered ''Youth at the Stream'' to be the most beautiful work at the R.A. exhibition in 1844 and, in 1846, commissioned a statuette version of it in bronze of which this is one. Foley also sent ''Youth at the Steam'' to an exhibition in Westminster Hall in 1844, which resulted in his selection by the Commissioners, along with Calder Marshall and John Bell, to create works in sculpture for the new Houses of Parliament. His political portraits, in particular, that of John Hampden, led to his rapid ascension to the status of the pre-eminent sculptor of mid-Victorian Britain. He was made an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1849 and a full member in 1858.
