CHRISTUS - SALVATOR Öl auf Holz. 42 x 32 cm. Geschnitzter alter vergoldeter Rahmen. Dem Gemälde ist eine ausführlich dokumentierende Expertise von Alessandro Delpriori beigegeben. Darin wird das Werk in die Zeit um 1540/1550 datiert, zudem wird das Datum des Geburtsjahres von 1512 auf 1509 korrigiert. Die Darstellung zeigt Christus als „Salvator mundi“ im Halbbildnis vor dunklem Hintergrund. Der Kopf geneigt, der Blick spricht den Betrachter an. Über dem Haupt ein Nimbus, darin das Kreuzsymbol in Rot. Das kastanienbraune Haar reicht zu den Schultern herab, die Tunika in der attributiven Farbe Rot, der Mantel in dunklem Türkis und Braun. Das Sujet findet sich noch ein andermal in einer weiteren Version, aber auch einer mit Zuschreibung an Ferdinand Voet (1539 Antwerpen - 1700 Paris), dort jedoch jeweils mit abweichender Handhaltung. Dass im vorliegenden Werk die Hand mit dem Zeigefinger nach rechts gerichtet ist, mag darauf hindeuten, dass es sich hier um ein Andachtsbild handelt, in dem Christus auf ein Objekt außerhalb der Darstellung weist, etwa auf ein Altarkreuz. Dies macht plausibel, dass es sich hier um eine frühere, authentische Version handelt. Der Maler wirkte in mehreren Städten, kurzzeitig 1560 auch in Fontainebleau. Vor allem aber ist seine Zusammenarbeit mit Vasari und Zuccaro zu nennen, deren Stil auch auf ihn eingewirkt hat. Als erster Lehrer des weit jüngeren Ludovico Carracci (1555 -1619) hatte er auch auf die spätere Generation Einfluss. Sein Spätstil lässt bereits den Manierismus erkennen, beeinflusst von Michelangelo. Als Porträtist war er höchst gefragt. Die diesbezügliche Qualität ist auch in dem vorliegenden Gemälde erkennbar. Rechts unten am Bettrand ist ihr gemeinsamer Sohn Amor zu erkennen, der in seinen Händen Pfeil und Bogen hält. Oben links eine große rechteckige Fensteröffnung, die den Blick nach draußen in eine weite Landschaft gewehrt. Prospero Fontana (1512 - 1597) - Salvator Mundi

Oil on wood panel. Prospero Fontana was born in Bologna and received his early education at Innocenzo da Imola. Active in Genoa and then in Florence, where he worked on the frescoes in the Palazzo Vecchio. After returning to his hometown, he opened an art school. He was one of the predecessors of Ludovico and Agostino Carracci. His style was eclectic and his early work in particular blends classicist Raphaelist painting with the new expressive Mannerism associated with Tuscan culture brought about by Giorgio Vasari. The painting depicting a half-length figure of Christ in three-quarter view was created between 1540 and 1550. Jesus wears a purple tunic adorned with gold and a green cloak over his shoulders. The head is slightly inclined towards the right shoulder and his long brown hair flows over his shoulders. Above his head shines a halo. The painting is a smaller version of a work with the same subject that sold at Christie’s in Milan in 2011. In addition to the color range, the paintings share similarities in the position of the figure, his facial expression, and the modelling of the cloak. PROSPERO FONTANA

(Bologna, 1509/1512 - Roma, 1597) L'omaggio a Niobe China su carta, cm 19,5X43 Allievo di Innocenzo da Imola, collaboratore di Perin del Vaga nel cantiere di Palazzo Doria e attivo verosimilmente nel Palazzo Ducale di Genova, Prospero Fontana fu uno dei protagonisti del manierismo emiliano e pittore pontificio durante il papato di Giulio III. L'attività giovanile con il Bonaccorsi è infatti attestata da Raffaello Borghini che nel 'Riposo' scritto nel 1584 appunta che l'artista 'lavorò in Genova nel palagio del Principe Doria, e poi con Perino del Vaga nelle sale del Palagio della Signoria, e particolarmente in quella del Consiglio: e delle istorie, che vi sono, fece disegni piccoli' (cfr. R. Borghini, 'Il Riposo', Firenze 1584, p. 568). A Genova il Fontana condusse la sua attività fino ai primi anni del quarto decennio avendo modo di conoscere anche il Pordenone e Girolamo da Treviso. Nel 1534 è documentata la sua presenza a Bologna dove il sodalizio con Girolamo prosegue negli affreschi a monocromo con storie romane che decoravano la facciata di palazzo Torfanini, 'tuto instoriato di chiaro esquro [sic] meso de ma[n] de Gironimo da Treviso e il resto de Prospero Fontana bologneso' (Cfr. P. Lamo, Graticola di Bologna, Bologna 1844, p. 26). L'attività capitolina del pittore inizia nel 1544 nel cantiere di Castel Sant'Angelo in cui era attivo Perin del Vaga e in questi anni il suo stile diviene decorativamente fluido nelle eleganze ritmiche, si arricchisce degli esempi del Primaticcio e si avvale di citazioni antiquariali alimentate da una fervida erudizione letteraria e mitologica. Nella città eterna fu importantissimo anche l'esempio di Polidoro Caldara da Caravaggio e il foglio qui presentato è una raffinata citazione del fregio dipinto che decora Palazzo Milesi a Roma raffigurante il mito di Niobe e che riscosse uno straordinario successo come attestano gli studi realizzati nei decenni successivi da non pochi artefici (A. Marabottini, Polidoro da Caravaggio, Roma 1969, 1, pp. 126 - 129, 366 - 368- M. Errico, S.S. Finozzi, I. Giglio, Ricognizione e schedatura delle facciate affrescate e graffite a Roma nei secoli XV e XVI, in 'Bollettino d'arte', 33-34, 1985, pp. 53-134). Il corpus grafico del Fontana conta poco più di una sessantina di fogli e non pochi sono quelli a carattere ornamentale soventemente riferiti a altri maestri. Nel nostro caso, il disegno si dovrebbe collocare intorno al 1550, quando oltre agli esempi della maniera tosco-romana, il pittore riesuma l'influenza del Parmigianino e del Salviati. DAMENBILDNIS – TOCHTER DES MALERS LAVINIA FONTANA Öl auf Holz. Parkettiert. 60 x 46 cm. Der bedeutende Maler – bis heute zu wenig im allgemeinen Bewusstsein – wirkte bereits als Assistent von Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574) und Zuccaro (1529-1566) in Rom, um dann 1560 kurzzeitig nach Fontainebleau zu gehen, wo er vom dortigen Manierismus beeinflusst wurde, um sich schließlich in Bologna niederzulassen. Hier wurde er der erste Lehrer von Ludovico Caracci (1555-1619). Prospero war Vater der Malerin Lavinia Fontana (1552-1614). Neben den naturgemäß zahlreicheren sakralen Bildmotiven widmete er sich auch dem Portrait. Hierbei erreichte er eine äußerst realistische Wiedergabe auch der seelischen Befindlichkeit der Portraitierten. Dies ist, in dem vorliegenden Gemälde als auch in dem Portrait einer Edeldame zu erkennen, das sich im Museo Civico in Montepulciano befindet, oder dem Bildnis im Musée des Beaux Arts in Straßburg. Das vorliegende Gemälde zeigt die Dargestellte in mittlerem Alter, in weißem Seidenkleid mit leicht gepufften Ärmeln und spitzenbesetztem Kragen über schwarzer Weste. Das zurückgekämmte Haar weist betonte Stirnecken auf. Prosperos Tochter Lavinia Fontana, wurde als Schülerin ihres Vaters ebenfalls eine bedeutende Malerin. Nach Mitteilung des Kunsthistorikers Alexander Rauch handelt es sich bei dem vorliegenden Portrait um das Bildnis der Tochter des Malers. Dies ließe sich durch Vergleich mit Selbstbildnissen der Lavinia Prospero erhärten. Ihr frühes jugendliches Selbstbildnis, das sie am Tisch mit Zeichenpapier und einer Figur zeigt, aber auch das spätere, in dem sie an einem Cembalo sitzend wiedergegeben ist, weisen die entsprechende Physiognomie auf, sowohl was den Haaransatz, die Fülle des Gesichtes, als auch die unverwechselbare, leicht füllige Mundpartie betrifft. Von hohem Interesse ist jedoch der runde, bislang nicht gedeutete Gegenstand, in Art einer Lupe, den sie in der Hand hält. In einem goldenen Rähmchen ist außer verschwommener Figuration eines Gewandknopfes lediglich eine weiße Taube zu sehen. Nach Meinung von Rauch handelt es sich hier um ein aus früherer Restaurierung verändertes Bilddetail. Der Gegenstand wurde als Attribut wohl abgeändert, nachdem für Lavinia 1611 von Antonio Cassone eine Ehrenmedaille geschaffen wurde, das sie auf der Vorderseite im Profilbildnis, auf der Rückseite als Malerin an der Staffelei zeigt. Diese Beobachtung dürfte nach Rauch hinreichend Indiz dafür sein, dass das Gemälde zwar laut beigegebenem Artikel von Vera Fortunati (s.u.) von Prospero geschaffen sein kann, jedoch nach 1611 in diesem Detail abgeändert worden sein muss, später wohl noch einmal verunklärt. In künftiger Forschung könnte auch Lavinia Fontana selbst als Autor des Bildes zum Gegenstand werden. Beigegeben: Artikel von Vera Fortunati, S. 19 ff. m. Abb. Besides the numerous holy image motifs he also painted portraits. Prospero's daughter, Lavinia Fontana (1552 Bologna - 1614 Rome), studied with her father and also became an important painter. According to the art historian Alexander Rauch the portrait on offer for sale in this lot is a portrait of the artist's daughter. Die Darstellung wurde von Giulio Bonasone gestochen (B. 202) und im Liber I Symb[olum] XXV in Achillis Bocchii Symbolicarum Questionum de Universo Genere serio ludebat, Bologna 1555, publiziert (siehe Stefania Massari: Giulio Bonasone, Rom 1983, Bd. 2, S. 43, wo auch die zugehörigen Texte abgebildet sind). Der Haupttitel lautet „Suspecta iure est in superbo comitas“, was Maria Bianchelli Illuminati auf S. 194-195 mit „A ragione desta sospetti la cortesia del superbo“ übersetzt. Über Zeichnungen des Bonasone ist nichts bekannt. Nach J. A. Gere und Philipp Pouncey „... the design of many of the illustrations in Bocchi’s book is attributed by Malvasia (Felsina i, p. 176) to Prospero Fontana” (siehe Italian Drawings in the Department of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum: Artists working in Rome c. 1550 - c. 1640, London 1983, S.76). Attributed to Prospero Fontana An allegorical personification of Opinio and Virtus, both holding scales pen and brown wash over black chalk, with brown pen and wash border, on laid paper watermarked with a six-pointed star, with 33 inscribed verso, 12.5 x 9.5cm (5 x 3 3/4 in), unframed. The drawing bears a very close resemblance to the eight drawings by Fontana held in the British Museum, which themselves relate to Giulio Bonasone's engravings for Achille Bocchi's Symbolicarum Quaestionum [...] Libri Quinque (Bologna 1555). The current drawing plausibly comes from the same series of the 84 drawings that were broken up in Sotheby's Ellesmere Collection sale, 1972.

Contemporary French vellum, yapp edges, richly gilt, sides decorated in an arabesque design, flat spine richly gilt in five compartments, yapp edges decorated with a gilt roll tool, edges gilt. FIRST EDITION of this celebrated emblem book, probably bound for presentation. Bocchi, an Italian humanist, is considered to be "among the first emblematists" (Praz). Symbolicarum quaestionum "takes as its subject the whole of universal knowledge: physics, metaphysics, theology, dialectic, Love, Life and Death, packaging them under the veil of fables and myths" (John Manning, The Emblem 2002 p.114). This copy with the second setting of quire B, confirming to the style of quire D (see Mortimer and lot 42).
