    NICOLÁS FORTEZA (Felanitx, 1918 - Palma, 2010). "Marina del norte, Mallorca", 1953. Oil on canvas board. Signed, dated and dedicated to Don C. Gil, on the back. Measures: 32.5 x 40 cm; 41 x 49 cm (frame). A self-taught painter and pharmacist, Nicolás Forteza held his first exhibition in 1951. During the first years of his career he combined his work as a pharmacist with painting, but gradually he began to devote himself full time to art. He was particularly interested in landscape painting, because, as he himself said: "I am in love with Mallorca, that is why I paint it". Landscapes such as the Serra Nord, Deià, Pollença, Valldemossa and Alcúdia are the protagonists of his paintings. Throughout his career he has held numerous exhibitions, both individual and collective, both locally and internationally. His work was exhibited in London in 1978, Hannover in 1984, Paris in 1985 and Geneva in 1990. The artist was also president of the Agrupació Sindical de Belles Arts de Balears between 1969 and 1977 and a member of the European Academy of the Arts since 1985. In this case, he offers us a wide panoramic view in which the sea, with its luminous turquoise waters, is undoubtedly the protagonist. In the foreground, rocky cliffs can be seen, dotted with vegetation, which open out onto the calm waters, crossed by a few sailing boats that add a human touch to the landscape. A line of cliffs closes the composition and separates the blue of the sea from the slightly lighter, intensely luminous blue of the sky.
