Comparable work : A print from this series is in the Museum of Modern Art, New York (no. 903.2016.2) Born in Cameroon to Nigerian parents, Samuel Fosso grew up in the Central African Republic, where he fled the civil war in Biafra. An apprentice photographer from the age of twelve, he opened his own studio in Bangui in 1975 and began photographing himself to finish his rolls of film - self-portraits first sent to his grandmother, which would become the core of his practice. In these performative images, he dons costumes and attributes borrowed from his icons, exploring the intersections of gender, identity and post-colonial Africa. Unknown beyond Bangui until 1993, when photographer Bernard Deschamps discovered his work and included him in the first Rencontres de Bamako, he quickly established himself as one of the leading figures in contemporary African photography. His self-portraits are included in the collections of the Tate Modern, the Centre Georges Pompidou, the Musée du Quai Branly - Jacques Chirac and the MoMA in New York. In 2008, he created African Spirits, his most famous series: thirteen black-and-white self-portraits in which he portrays tutelary figures of pan-Africanism and the civil rights movement - Angela Davis, Patrice Lumumba, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King. Slipping into their clothes and recreating their iconic poses, Fosso summons up their memory while questioning the notion of identity. "I had to pay homage to those who made my freedom possible.

FR Après une enfance marquée par la guerre civile du Nigéria, Samuel Fosso se lance dans la photographie dès ses 13 ans. Le photographe camerounais ouvre un studio à Bangui, en République Centrafricaine, et réalise des autoportraits sur les chutes de pellicules. Fosso se déguise, se met en scène, et se capture tel un photographe de mode, dans des postures et tenues plus extravagantes les unes que les autres. Il repousse les limites de l’autoportrait grâce à sa capacité à réellement incarner des personnages en tous genres, dans des clichés qui déconstruisent la vision exotique du corps noir. Entre 1973 et 1978, Samuel Fosso réalise la série « 70’s Lifestyle », un ensemble de 60 autoportraits en noir et blanc. L’adolescent qu’il est alors explore l’image de soi avec audace, se mettant en scène dans des tenues glamour : chemises ajustées, chaussures à plateformes, lunettes teintées, qui rappellent l’univers du funk et de la mode de l’époque. Dans le cadre intimiste de son studio à Bangui, il transforme la photographie en espace d’émancipation, jouant avec les codes de la masculinité noire, des représentations sociales et culturelles post-coloniales. Ces images marquent l’affirmation d’une identité libre et plurielle. Exposé à travers le monde, notamment au Tate Modern à Londres, au MoMA à New York ou au Centre Pompidou à Paris, c’est en 1994 que Samuel Fosso remporte le premier prix des Rencontres de Bamako pour son travail de photographie. EN After a childhood marked by the Nigerian Civil War, Samuel Fosso began his journey in photography at the age of 13. The Cameroonian photographer opened a studio in Bangui, in the Central African Republic, where he started taking self-portraits using leftover film. Fosso would dress up, stage himself, and capture his image like a fashion photographer, each pose and outfit more extravagant than the last. He pushed the boundaries of self-portraiture with his remarkable ability to fully embody a wide range of characters, producing images that deconstruct exoticized views of the Black body. Between 1973 and 1978, Samuel Fosso created the series 70’s Lifestyle, a collection of 60 black-and-white self-portraits. As a teenager, he boldly explored self-image, posing in glamorous outfits, fitted shirts, platform shoes, and tinted glasses, that echoed the world of funk and fashion at the time. In the intimate setting of his Bangui studio, he transformed photography into a space of emancipation, playing with the codes of Black masculinity and post-colonial social and cultural representations. These images assert a free and multifaceted identity. Fosso’s work has been exhibited around the world, including at Tate Modern in London, MoMA in New York, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Cet ensemble exceptionnel ornait la devanture du studio photo de Fosso à Bangui (reproduction dans Samuel Fosso, Maria-Francesca Bonetti et Guido Schlinkert, 5 Continents Editions, Milan, 2004, p. 97 et 99). Ces vintages sont des portraits de quelques clients par Fosso. Ils montrent pour la première fois le travail de portraitiste accompli pendant la journée par le jeune photograhe (ouverture de son premier studio, le Studio National, le 14 septembre 1975), avant que, le soir, il ne se représente lui-même dans la solitude retrouvée de son studio.
