GEORGE FRAMPTON (1860-1928) SAINT CHRISTINA, 1889 plaster relief panel, oak frame, signed Geo. Frampton 89 (42cm (16 3/4in) high, 23.5cm (9 1/4in) wide) Footnote: Literature: Beattie, S., The New Sculpture, London, 1983, p. 87, pl. 68 (similar bronze example illustrated from the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool); Coleman, B., The Best of British Arts & Crafts, Atglen, 2004, p. 229 (illustrated). Note: It was for his bas-relief work that Frampton initially found recognition and the composition of this work pays tribute to 15th-century portraiture. He had an ability to create forms conveying a sense of depth that were actually very shallow. St Christina is portrayed as a mystical figure combining occult-like spirituality with earlier secular portraiture.

Bronze; with dark brown patina England, 1915 George Frampton (1860-1928) - English sculptor and representative of the 'New Sculpture' movement Monogrammed and dated 'GF 1915' at the right side of the base Titled 'Madonna' at the front side of the base Overall height, with base: 28 cm Good condition Provenance: from a British private collection A fine work by a notable British sculptor; Madonna sculptures by George Frampton fetch more than 16,000 Euros at international auctions This charming bronze bust of a Madonna was made by the English sculptor George Frampton in 1915. He was a leading member of the so called 'New Sculpture' movement that came up in the late 19th century. Its followers propagated a naturalistic style and explored the possibilities of increasing the liveliness and vitality in sculpture. Accordingly, our Madonna wears a simple bonnet that immediately reminds of the traditional costume of a real servant maid. Furthermore, her face has a youthful shine and almost seems to be the portrait of a girl. The artist may have been inspired by his bronze sculpture 'Enid the Fair' from 1907, as the female's facial expressions have a striking resemblance. The bronze sculpture is in a good overall condition with only slight traces of age and use. Both pedestal and sculpture are of bronze. The upper edge of the pedestal as well as the collar show small manufactory-related flaws. The artist's monogram 'GF' and the date '1915' are at the right side of the pedestral. The title 'Madonna' is set on the front side of it. Bust and base measure 28 cm in total. George Frampton (1860-1928) The British sculptor George Frampton was part of the 'New Sculpture' movement that came up in England in the late 19th century. Its followers revived the naturalistic style and concentrated on the development of liveliness and vitality in sculpture. A large part of Frampton's oeuvre shows busts and sculptures of famous personalities, such as the Queen Victoria herself. One of his most popular works in public space is the bronze of the novel character Peter Pan from 1912 that is located in the Kensington Gardens in London. (cbo)
