  • Charles X style table clock; France, second third of the nineteenth century. Gilded bronze and brass dial. It has Brocot suspension. Preserves pendulum and key. Signed on the dial.
    Nov. 26, 2024

Charles X style table clock; France, second third of the nineteenth century. Gilded bronze and brass dial. It has Brocot suspension. Preserves pendulum and key. Signed on the dial.

    Est: €3,000 - €3,500

Charles X style table clock; France, second third of the nineteenth century. Gilded bronze and brass dial. It has Brocot suspension. Preserves pendulum and key. Signed on the dial. Measurements: 61 x 32 x 18 cm. Clock of sculptural conception of Empire style that is arranged on a square base of sharp edges with an elegant and synthetic vegetable relief in the front area. The upper part is defined by the presence of a round figure representing a young naked lady who turns her face with respect to the figure of the viewer. The lady rests her arm on a rocky area that serves as a base to frame the clock face with a golden finish and Roman numerals in black. Nineteenth century bronze table clocks were key pieces in interior decoration and design, as well as symbols of social status and refinement. Elaborately crafted and often adorned with artistic motifs, these clocks not only served to measure time, but also reflected the technical advances and taste for fine craftsmanship of the time. Bronze, a durable and aesthetically appreciated material, allowed the creation of complex and elegant forms, integrating styles such as neoclassical or rococo, which made them highly valued objects in the residences of high society. It has Brocot suspension. Retains pendulum and key.

Letter Signed, "Charles," to French Ambassador to Spain Raymond de Rouer de Pavie de Beccarie, Baron de Fourquevaux, in French, expressing incredulousness at the news of the imprisonment of Carlos, Prince of Asturias, requesting further information, reporting that it was difficult to learn the details from King Philip II's ambassador in France Francis de Alava, expressing pity for Don Carlos and hoping for reconciliation between him and his father. Countersigned by Secretary of State Nicolas de Neufville. 1¼ pages, folio, with integral address leaf; minor tears and curling at edges, faint scattered staining, horizontal folds. Paris, 13 February 1568 "I find the fact of the imprisonment of the Price of Spain the strangest thing I ever heard. Not being able to believe it--that this could have happened . . . to a man such as you have described . . . . --I want to be enlightened as to the truth . . . . The man in question [Francis de Alava] made no sign of talking with us until he realized . . . that I was aware of the said fact [imprisonment of Don Carlos] . . . . He began to speak to us . . . but in such a way that he didn't seem to want to . . . go into the matter, but rather he said to us only that there were things between the father and the son which did not go beyond that relationship and were very likely to quiet down . . . ."
