Here, as in other comparable paintings from his late period, he has devoted his attention to his large garden in Hohenzollernstraße in Berlin-Wannsee, which he had fundamentally altered over the years. Where enclosed beds and rose arches had originally stood, Franck had planted the tulip bulbs that were so difficult to acquire during the war and for which he had traded one of his paintings: their flowering in the spring is incomparably splendid. At his father’s insistence (and needing his support) he began studying architecture at the Frankfurt Business College. After his father’s death he gave up architecture entirely and devoted himself entirely to art, beginning his studies at the Städelsche Kunstinstitut when he was seventeen. Nevertheless, his years of training had a significant impact on his landscapes, portraits, and other products, as well as early exposure to artists like Heinrich Hasselhorst and Eduard Jakob von Steinle. He illustrated small books of romantic fairytales, which brought him financial stability but sometimes curried controversy as the editors often requested more racy images of nudes and satyr-like behavior from his subjects. In 1879 he moved to Kronberg im Taunus and joined a painter’s colony. While there he befriended Anton Burger and took lessons with him until 1881. However, they eventually split due to differing opinions on how to depict nature, and he enrolled at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, having been recommended there by Jakob Fürchtegott Dielmann. In 1886 he began traveling throughout Germany for inspiration, eventually settling in Würzburg, where he opened a studio. However, his attempts to sell his more Impressionist pieces were met with resistance, as people still wanted his illustrations and were less interested in his new style. He moved to Berlin in 1892 to accept an offer of being a teacher at the Royal Art School. By the mid 1890s he had shifted away from his drypoints and early illustrations entirely, although prints of his early pieces would continue to be produced throughout the first half of the 20th Century. In 1898 he was awarded the title of Professor, and became co-founder of the Berlin Secession group together with Lovis Corinth and Max Liebermann. In 1902 his first wife died, and two years later he married one of his students, which courted further controversy. In 1960 they moved to Halensee on the Wannsee in an effort to establish a new artists’ colony modeled after Kronberg, but it was unsuccessful. He returned to Berlin and became the Director of the Royal Art School in 1915. In 1928 he made his first journey outside of Germany to attend the International Exhibition at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. During the Third Reich Franck retreated from public life, as his later works were considered “degenerate” by the Nazis but his earlier pastoral scenes were still appreciated. His eldest son, a scientist, was able to protect him from interrogation by the Gestapo, but he was badly injured in a daylight bombing raid by the Allies on March 6th, 1944, dying a week later. Today many of his early pieces are in public and private collections, with his surviving Impressionist works commanding large sums at auctions.
