LEO FRANK AUSTRIAN, 1884-1948 HAY HARVEST - CA. 1920 Color woodcut print Lower right signed: Leo Frank Catalogue note: Leo Frank was a painter and printmaker born in Vienna in 1884, Like his twin brother Hans, Leo became a painter who specialized in landscapes, still lifes, and portraits; and a printmaker who specialized in color woodcuts. Between 1903 and 1907, he studied at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule (School of Applied Arts) under Professor Anton von Kenner and later under Professor Franz Rumpler at the Academy of Fine Arts between 1907 and 1911. From 1920 to 1945, Frank was a Professor at the Department of Prints and Drawings at the Academy. In 1921 he became a member of the Künstlerhaus, Vienna's oldest artists society. His work was included in the Spring Exhibition at the Secession Gallery in Vienna in 1911. Later in his career his color woodcuts were included in the Print Makers Society of California's International Print Makers exhibitions in 1925, 1926, 1927, 1928, 1929, and 1931. His work is represented in the collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Leo Frank was awarded the Austrian State Prize in 1925, the Golden Medal of Fine Arts of Vienna in 1928, the State Prize Medal in 1937, and the Golden Laurel of the Künstlerhaus in 1954.

Born in Vienna in 1884 as the twin brother of Hans Frank, he studied at the School of Applied Arts from 1903 to 1907 and at the Academy of Fine Arts under Franz Rumpler from 1907 to 1911, followed by extensive travels throughout Europe. From 1920 to 1945, he was a professor at the Graphic Arts Teaching and Research Institute, and in 1921 he became a member of the Künstlerhaus. He married Louise Eiles in 1922 and settled in Perchtoldsdorf in 1950, where he worked until his death in 1959. Frank created landscapes, still lifes, portraits and fine woodcuts as well as etchings with an impressionistic atmosphere; awards: Austrian State Prize 1925, Vienna Gold Medal of Honour 1928, State Prize Medal 1937, Golden Laurel of the Künstlerhaus 1954. Leo Frank (1884-1959) was an Austrian painter and printmaker who, along with his twin brother Hans, received formal artistic training in Vienna, including at the Vienna Academy. From 1920 to 1945, Frank traveled extensively, avoiding much of the era's turmoil, though he frequently returned to Vienna to serve as a professor in the Academy’s Drawing and Print Department. Influenced by Art Deco and Japonisme, he primarily focused on landscapes in his woodblock prints, eschewing human figures in favor of birds or beasts of burden. Due to the effects of World War II, Frank withdrew from the art world and died near his native city in 1959.
