Patinated bronze sculpture depicting a reclining, pipe-playing faun or satyr interacting with a small animal on a rocky outcrop, all mounted on a multi-tiered, veined green marble base. Signature in cast bronze. Size: 15 x 6 1/4 x 9 1/4 in. Emmanuel Frémiet (1824–1910) was a French sculptor best known for his highly detailed animal sculptures and monumental public monuments. Trained in Paris and influenced by both scientific observation and academic art, he gained recognition for works depicting horses, dogs, gorillas, and other animals with exceptional realism. Frémiet also created several notable historical sculptures, including equestrian monuments and a famous statue of Joan of Arc in Paris. His work combined technical precision with dramatic storytelling, making him one of the leading sculptors of nineteenth-century France.

Emmanuel Fremiet was a French sculptor. He is famous for his sculpture of Joan of Arc in Paris (and its "sister" statues in Philadelphia and Portland, Oregon) and the monument to Ferdinand de Lesseps in Suez. Born in Paris, he was a nephew and pupil of Rude and chiefly devoted himself to animal sculpture. His earliest work was in scientific lithography (osteology), and for a while he served in times of adversity in the gruesome office of painter to the Morgue. In 1843 he sent to the Salon a study of a Gazelle, and after that date was prolific as an animal sculptor. His Wounded Bear and Wounded Dog were produced in 1850, and the Luxembourg Museum at once secured this example of his work.

He received his artistic training under Emmanuel Frémiet (1824-1910) in Paris. In 1875 he first took part in the exhibitions of the Paris Salon and was henceforth regularly represented with works. Lecourtier repeatedly received the prestigious award of a medal; at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900, he obtained, for example, the bronze medal. As an animal sculptor, the artist is best known for his lifelike depictions of dogs. Monumental bronzes of the artist are exhibited, for instance, in Buenos Aires or in Wassy, France. Lecourtier died in 1924.

    Emmanuel FRÉMIET (1824-1910), Conducteur de char romain (röm. Kutscher), Bronze, 44 x 40 x 18 cm, am Sockel FREMIET. Über ovalem Stand naturalistisch gestalteter Boden mit römischem Soldat und zwei Pferden. Sehr lebhafte Komposition. Frémiet stellte seit 1843 im Pariser Salon aus und erlangte zahlreiche Auszeichnungen. Er beerbte Louis Barye als Professor für Tierzeichnungen am Naturhistorischen Museum in Paris. Werke von Frémiets Hand finden sich unter anderem im Musée d'Orsay.
