Notes: Annie French was born in Glasgow and studied at the Glasgow School of Art from 1886–89 under Fra Newbery. She became known as one of the “Glasgow Girls,” a group of women artists working at the turn of the twentieth century, which included Bessie MacNicol, Helen Paxton Brown, and Frances Macdonald. Glasgow’s industry was booming, and artists and designers were prospering. The decorative arts were gaining recognition- textiles, ceramics, and jewellery were increasingly considered alongside the Fine Arts, allowing women to excel within this newly elevated creative sphere. Many young women artists formed close friendships and shared studio spaces in the city centre; Annie French shared a studio with Bessie Young and Jane Younger. Inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement and Art Nouveau, flowing linear motifs often appeared throughout their work, and this aesthetic was applied across a range of creative disciplines, from book illustration to fabric design. Annie French was particularly celebrated for her linear technique. She excelled as an etcher and draftswoman, delicate, lace-like lines run throughout her work. This etching is a wonderful example, the composition is rendered in fine detail- with flowing heavily patterned fabrics, graphic hair accessories, and complex design enveloping the sitter.

French exhibited her watercolours regularly at the Royal Glasgow Institute and the Royal Academy. The illustrator Philippe Jullian (see lots 164 & 239) called her 'a lace-maker', reflecting her intricate and delicate style of figures as 'spirits composed of cobwebs rather than creatures of flesh and blood'.

(ARR).  Provenance:  Christie's Scotland, 9th April 1981, part lot 19;  The Collection of the Late Lee Witkin;  His Estate;  Where acquired by the present owner.  Note:  French studied under Francis Newbery (1855-1946) and Jean Delville (1867-1953) at the Glasgow School of Art, which she attended between 1886-89. It was here that she was associated with a group of pioneering female artists and designers, including Jessie M. King (1875-1949), Frances MacDonald (1873-1921), and Ann Macbeth (1875-1948), who later became known as the 'Glasgow Girls'.  French is known for her distinctive illustrations which are clearly heavily inspired by the Art Nouveau movement, with swirling, dense, and highly graphic compositions which exhibit the influence, in particular, of her contemporary Aubrey Beardsley (1872-1898).

(ARR).  Provenance:  Sotheby's at Scone Palace, 13 April 1981, lot 95.  Note:  French studied under Francis Newbery (1855-1946) and Jean Delville (1867-1953) at the Glasgow School of Art, which she attended between 1886-89. It was here that she was associated with a group of pioneering female artists and designers, including Jessie M. The present work is particularly striking in its intricacy, with the subject, depicting a girl utterly engrossed in a book whilst seated in a thicket, evoking a sense of fantasy and reverie which renders French's work so compelling.

Unlike her contemporary Jessie M. King (for whom see lots 202 and 293), French's "interest in art was encouraged by her family, and she was a student at the Glasgow School of Art from 1886 to 1889.     Annie French,  Scottish 1872-1965 -  The Old Ballard of Edward Edward;  pen and ink, watercolour and gouache on paper, signed lower right 'Annie French' and further inscribed on the backing board and with handwritten poem attached, 25 x 35.5 cm (ARR)  Provenance:  Christie's, London, British and Continental Watercolours and Drawings, 5th March 1998, lot 115;  private collection, purchased from the above  Note:  this work is based on the traditional Ballad 'Edward' dating to the 17th century, in which a mother questions her son about the blood on his blade, the scene depicted here.  Annie French was one of a vital group of artist that came to prominence in Scotland in the early 20th century, pioneering an Art Nouveau visual language that related to the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh. Like her friend Jessie M. King, French created highly ornate and florid scenes, often inspired by fairytales. A large number of her works are in public collections The Fleming Collection, Gallery Oldham and National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh.
