Lucian Freud Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1922 - d. 2011

Lucian Michael Freud, OM CH[1] (/fr??d/; 8 December 1922 – 20 July 2011) was a British painter and draughtsman, specialising in figurative art, and is known as one of the foremost 20th-century portraitists. He was born in Berlin, the son of Jewish architect Ernst L. Freud and the grandson of Sigmund Freud. Freud got his first name "Lucian" from his mother in memory of the ancient writer Lucian of Samosata. His family moved to England in 1933 to escape the rise of Nazism. From 1942 to 1943 he attended Goldsmiths College, London. He served at sea with the British Merchant Navy during the Second World War.

His early career as a painter was influenced by surrealism, but by the early 1950s his often stark and alienated paintings tended towards realism.[2] Freud was an intensely private and guarded man, and his paintings, completed over a 60-year career, are mostly of friends and family. They are generally sombre and thickly impastoed, often set in unsettling interiors and urban landscapes. The works are noted for their psychological penetration and often discomforting examination of the relationship between artist and model. Freud worked from life studies, and was known for asking for extended and punishing sittings from his models.

§ Lucian Freud OM, CH (1922-2011) Drawing after Watteau IV, 1983 charcoal 33.5 x 24cm Provenance: With James Kirkman, London Richard Salmon, London Private Collection, London GDW Projects, London In 1983, Freud unveiled what would be one of his most ambitious and monumental works - Large Interior, W11 (after Watteau). Inspired by Antoine Watteau’s small painting, Pierrot Content (circa 1712), Freud reimagines the fête galante parkland of the French master within the confines of his own Holland Park studio, and substitutes Watteau's commedia dell'arte characters with a cast of his own cherished muses, positioning lovers and offspring in close proximity. Though one may presume that the present lot is a preparatory sketch for Large Interior, it is, perhaps more intriguingly, one of a number of sketches Freud produced following the completion of the work. These supplementary drawings seem to function as a dissection or post-mortem analysis of his completed composition, enabling the artist to dissect his masterpiece into its constituent elements. Showing two studies of his seated cast pinned to an easel, the present work provides a unique insight into the artist's exploration and deconstruction of his own work.

                Est: £3,000 - £5,000

Lucian Freud (1922-2011) Still Life With Plant Pen and ink on paper, circa 1940-1949, sheet 247 x 180mm (9 5/8 x 7 1/8in) Provenance: James Kirkman, Lucian Freud's agent; Where acquired by the present owner; Raymond Hall, friend and model of Lucian Freud; Returned to the present owner, having been torn up by the artist Lot Essay: The current owner initially came into possession of Still Life With Plant through his relationship with the modern art dealer, James Kirkman, for whom he did framing work. Forty or so years ago, Kirkman - who was Freud's agent at the time and worked closely with Frank Auerbach - sold the current owner the pen and ink drawing depicting a potted plant for a paltry £90. A few years down the line, in an attempt to scrabble together some funds for a holiday, the owner removed Still Life With Plant from the sketchbook and sold it to Raymond Hall. Also known as Raymond Jones, the buyer was one of Freud's close friends and favoured models, who sat for masterpieces such as Naked Man with Rat (1977-8, Art Gallery of Western Australia). However, upon his return from his holiday, our vendor arrived home to find a letter from Raymond explaining how he had shown the sketch to a horrified Freud, who had promptly shredded the work on the spot. Apologetically enclosed in the letter were the individual fragments of the sketch. Now back in his possession, the owner had the work restored, but the scars still reveal the work's fascinating history. This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.

RELATED WORK Sleeping by the Lion Carpet, 1996, oil on canvas, 228.0 x 121.0 cm, The Lewis Collection, United Kingdom ESSAY By the early 1990s, Lucian Freud’s position at the apex of contemporary painting redefining portraiture was firmly cemented, with major international exhibitions placing his works alongside those of the Old Masters. Although Freud had only returned to the medium of etching in the 1980s, full scale retrospective solo exhibitions of his graphic works in this medium also appeared in galleries and museums by the early 2000s, acknowledging the central role of etching within the evolution and development of his oeuvre. A tour de force of this medium, Woman Sleeping, 1995 is a large full-length portrait of Sue Tilley, recumbent and asleep, starkly denuded in bare space. Displaying Freud’s confident mastery of this medium, its reductive and selective focus offers a refreshingly raw approach to the esteemed genre of the classical Nude.   Sleeping Woman belongs to a small suite of intimate works made at the late height of Freud’s career, between 1993 - 1996. This series counted four large format oil paintings (today all in private hands) and two etchings, all exploring with visceral immediacy the generous forms of ‘Big Sue’ in her unguarded physical presence. A friend of the artist and of fellow Freud muse, Australian performance artist, Leigh Bowery, Tilley is also known as the ‘Benefits Supervisor’ (she was working at a government service centre in Charing Cross at the time). Closely related to a painted work completed the following year, Sleeping by the Lion Carpet, the odalisque here is removed from her spatial context, from the studio accoutrements that had conferred a regal grandeur on her physical monumentality. Without the modulated colour and physical materiality of paint, Freud instead subjects Tilley to the process of reductive formal distillation that he had been employing in his intaglio Naked Portraits since the early 1980s. In this etching Freud makes little attempt to portray volume and texture with densely shaded tones and cross-hatched lines. Floating the negative space of delicate plate-tone, her luminous flesh is contained only by bulging emphatic contours and rare judicious patches of shadow. Her weight supported by (now invisible) furniture, her awkward supine form is suspended, directly contradicting the weight-bearing contours of her body and the flat nature of the paper.   Working from life in the studio with his copper plate propped on an easel 1, Freud’s Woman Sleeping, although very similar in pose to Sleeping by the Lion Carpet, is the product of a separate live study of Sue Tilley, with her limbs outstretched and foreshortened, turned towards the viewer. The composite perspective and subtle distortions in her position are incised and underscored on the copper plate with no possibility for revision. The extended period of time sitting for this portrait, both painted and etched, allowed the artist to construct a deep rapport with the sitter. Freud was yet to complete Sleeping on the Lion Carpet, his last painting of the series - this etching and the one that followed, Woman with an Arm Tattoo, 1996, were created in tandem with the suite of painted works. Through this process, his portraits of Tilley are suffused with hard-won candour, her dignified unclothed bravado challenging the idealised canons of the female nude. Freud, thus manipulating conventional codes of decorum to attract and distance the viewer in equal measure, has here created an extraordinarily powerful and visually disarming portrait.   1. RELATED WORK: Lucian Freud, Girl Sitting 1987-88, oil on canvas, private collection. Lucian Freud's 'Girl Holding Her Foot' features an anonymous sitter who also appears in a painting of the same name. The painting provides a clearer setting, depicting the girl seated on a quilted sofa in Freud's studio. The etching, however, presents the figure suspended in an undefined space. The focus is solely on the pose and presence of the woman, as her flesh contours the outline of her body. Freud's approach to his subjects goes beyond sketching them. Through long and challenging sittings, he forms an intimate connection with them, seeing them at their most relaxed, vulnerable or candid. His works reflect this intimacy, capturing the essence of the individuals rather than conforming to the prescribed expectations of beauty. Freud's 'naked portraits', as he preferred to call them, challenge the conventional standards of portraiture. They offer an unidealised view of female portraiture, of how breasts drop and pool on top of a woman's chest, curves buckle and extrude across the body. The artist has created 'Girl Holding Her Foot' as a pure and uninhibited portrayal of the human body. Whilst primarily a painter, etching became an integral part of his practice. Unlike traditional printmakers, Freud treats the etching plate as a canvas, standing the copper plate upright on an easel. As he does with his paintings, the artist works directly from his models and using intricate webs of finely etched lines to define their forms, bringing their individual features into relief. The figures, seen either cropped or floating in a void, convey a striking sense of emotional and formal abstraction. Whilst printmaking offer distinctly different approaches to painting, the artist embraces these unpredictabile outcomes of the etching plate. 'With an etching there's an element of danger and mystery. You don't know how it's going to come out. What's black is white. What's left is right' - Lucian Freud. Lucian Freud's etching oeuvre, including 'Girl Holding Her Foot', showcases his special ability to capture the human form with unflinching honesty and depth. Through meticulous attention to detail and intimate engagement with his subjects, Freud's etchings go beyond portraiture. They convey the weight and presence of the sitters, revealing their inner essence and challenging conventional notions of beauty. His etchings, alongside his paintings, stand as powerful and evocative works of art that continue the profound exploration of the human form.
