Johann Jakob Frey: View Along the Bay at Nettuno

      Est: €3,000 - €4,000

FREY, JOHANN JAKOB 1813 Basel - 1865 Frascati Title: View Along the Bay at Nettuno. Technique: Oil on canvas. Measurement: 28,5 x 40cm. Notation: Signed lower right: J.J. Frey fe. Frame: Framed. Verso: Old inscription on the stretcher: "Nettuno gegen das Cap Circello / Cap der Kirke" as well as an old, descriptive adhesive note on the canvas. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. Johann Jakob Frey, born in Basel and celebrated today especially for his impressive landscape paintings, was the son of the Swiss etcher Samuel Frey, with whom Johann also initially received his training. Formative for his oeuvre was the Grand Tour, an educational trip reserved for the European nobility of the 18th century. The Roman Campagna, the Albanian and Sabine mountains were among the Swiss artist's favourite destinations and motifs. Frey's expressive landscapes bear witness to a wide variety of influences from pioneering artists of 18th and 19th century Europe. On the one hand, he followed the academic ideal of landscape painting and is thus closely associated with Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin. On the other hand, he oriented himself towards the French Barbizon school, which had devoted itself to open-air painting. The result of these diverse influences is a meticulous elaboration of atmospheric, contemplative and topographical landscapes, such as in the present painting. Frey allows us a sweeping view of the bay of Nettuno, which seems to run into infinity. We see villagers going about their daily tasks and having friendly conversations with each other. Through the refined composition, the artist creates a contemplative moment of a joyful and distant place where life seems simple. Johann Jakob Frey Switzerland Romantic-realistic school 19th C. • Johann Jakob Frey: View of Rome from Monte Mario along the Tiber Valley
      Nov. 17, 2023

Johann Jakob Frey: View of Rome from Monte Mario along the Tiber Valley

      Est: €30,000 - €40,000

FREY, JOHANN JAKOB 1813 Basel - 1865 Frascati Title: View of Rome from Monte Mario along the Tiber Valley. Technique: Oil on canvas. Mounting: Relined. Measurement: 100 x 137cm. Notation: Signed and dated lower right: J.J. Frey / Roma 1846. Frame: Framed. Provenance: Auction Lempertz, Cologne, 14.05.1995; since private ownership, Germany. In 1836, ten years before this impressive painting was created, the Basel-born landscape painter Johann Jakob Frey had settled in Rome. He found classical landscape motifs on extensive hikes in the Roman countryside together with his artist colleagues Joseph Anton Koch, Johann Christian Reinhardt or Martin von Rohden. He made drawings and sketches on site, which Frey then turned into large paintings in his studio. And his works were very well received by the public, especially English and German tourists from the highest social circles. Frey's popularity increased even more after he took part in the Prussian expedition to Egypt led by the archaeologist Professor Richard Lepsius from 1842 to 1845. Now his studio became a magnet for foreign visitors who bought his exotic travel impressions from Egypt and Greece. But Roman motifs also continued to be extremely popular. The view of the "Eternal City" shown here from Monte Mario was taken precisely at this time after Frey's return to Rome. The landscape slopes gently; the gaze is drawn to the turquoise of the loop of the Tiber. There, in the distance, is the familiar silhouette of the metropolis with all its recognisable buildings. The river valley lies in a light haze; the nearby landscape elements, the towering pine trees and the figural staffages are bathed in a warm light by the low sun. The impact of the Egyptian trip on Frey's style and on his choice of colours is clearly evident in this painting. This motif was so popular with the public that Johann Jakob Frey painted at least two more versions of the view of Rome from Monte Mario that we still know today. JOHANN JAKOB FREY

      Est: CHF6,000 - CHF10,000

JOHANN JAKOB FREY (Basel 1813–1865 Frascati) Eastern landscape with ruins. Oil on canvas. 100 × 138 cm. Provenance: Private collection, Switzerland. --------------- JOHANN JAKOB FREY (Basel 1813–1865 Frascati) Orientalische Ruinenlandschaft. Öl auf Leinwand. 100 × 138 cm. Provenienz: Schweizer Privatbesitz. Die Ruinen der Stadt Antaeopolis malte Frey in unterschiedlichen Ausführungen (siehe Maltzahn Gallery (Hrsg.): A Collection of Drawings and Paintings by Johann Jacob Frey 1813-1865, London 1974, S. 7 ff.).
