Johnny Friedlaender Art for Sale at Auction

Johnny Friedlaender (1912-1992) was a leading European 20th century artist, best known for his pioneering use of aquatint etching. Friedlaender was born in Pless, Upper Silesia (modern day Poland), but refugeed to Breslau in 1921. At the age of 16, he enrolled at the Breslau Art Academy, where he studied under the Expressionist Otto Mueller. By 1930, Friedlaender had started exhibiting his works. Johnny Friedlaender and his wife would eventually settle in Paris as political refugees after the war years. He worked for various journals and focused on etching as his main medium of expression with the addition of watercolors. Friedlaender soon gained international notoriety for his innovation in colored printmaking. As a result of his work, a school formed in Paris. Friedlaender was presented with multiple awards throughout his international career, in addition to receiving a teaching post by UNESCO at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro. For the remainder of his career, Johnny Friedlaender held exhibitions in Milan, Paris, Tokyo, New York, and Bonn.
