Charles Arthur Fries (1854 - 1940) Oil on Board, Signed, Measures ( 12 x 16 inches ) w/frame ( 13.5 x 17.5 inches ) Born in Hillsboro, Ohio, Charles Fries was referred to as the dean of San Diego artists from the time he settled in that city in 1897. His reputation was based on magnificent atmospheric desert landscapes, many of them showing historical scenes of the state. He was raised in Cincinnati and apprenticed there to a lithographer and then studied portraiture at McMicken Art Academy where he associated with other men who became famous artists--J.H. Twachtman, Robert Blum, Kenyon Cox, and Frank Duveneck. He traveled from his Cincinnati studio to sketch in the Southwest, and his lithographs of these travels appeared in "Harper's," "Leslie's," and "Century" magazines. When he was seventeen years old, he began working in New York City as an illustrator and portrait painter, and five years later, he went to Europe for art study and received many laudatory reviews in Paris journals for his painting. • Rare Bird's Eye View Map of Cincinnati, 1886
    Apr. 20, 2022

Rare Bird's Eye View Map of Cincinnati, 1886

    Est: $1,500 - $3,000

An extremely scarce folded supplement, published in 1886 by the Illustrated News, Cincinnati, OH, as a supplement to the Cincinnati Illustrated News - Grand Exposition Number, August 21. Depicting a bird's-eye view map of the "Queen City" as it was in 1886, from Fountain Square looking north and capturing an expansive area, from Fairmount to the Bellevue House to Mt. Adams dotting the horizon. Within these boundaries are too many landmarks to list all of them here, including old Cincinnati businesses, government buildings, streets and statuary. Below the plate are detailed listings of noteworthy buildings and sectors of the city. This engraving provides a wonderful and accurate glimpse into the city of Cincinnati during the late 19th century, at a time when it was a thriving industrial and cultural powerhouse of the Midwest. The artist responsible for the scene is Charles Arthur Fries (1854-1940), who also worked as an illustrator, lithographer and painter. Sight size: 30" ht. x 42.5" wd., framed size: 42" ht. x 53.5" wd.
