Mediterranean landscape Oil on canvas h. 25-1/2 w. 21-1/4 in. Signed 'R. Dufy' lower middle and on stretcher; canvas signed (and crossed out) 'E. Friesz'. Possibly an early, collaborative work between Friesz and his longtime friend, Raoul Dufy. Unframed. Biography from Washington County Museum of Fine Arts "Born in Le Havre, France to a family of navigators, Achille Friesz studied first at the lycee in his hometown on the Normandy coast, and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Although he studied the great painters like Veronese, Rubens, Chardin, Delacroix and Corot and made copies of their canvases at the Louvre, he admired the work of the modernists, such as Raoul Dufy, Henri Matisse, George Braque and the Fauves. Friesz collaborated with Dufy on the decoration of the Palace of Chaillot. A member of the Salon d'Automne, Friesz did portraits and landscapes of Brittany and Normandy, as well as other areas, including Germany, Italy and Portugal. He painted in the United States, and in 1925, won the prestigious Carnegie Prize. Friesz painted, taught art students and illustrated books, including an edition of Ronsard. The artist's work is in major museums throughout the world."

In 2007, three French museums dedicated an exhibition to Othon Friesz: La Piscine-musée d’Art et d’Industrie de Roubaix, the Musée d'Art Moderne de Céret and the Musée d'Art Moderne André-Malraux (MuMa) in Le Havre, the painter's birthplace. They called the exhibition “Othon Friesz. Le Fauve baroque.” This title is no coincidence, for just as Friesz burst onto the Fauvist scene alongside his great friend Raoul Dufy and associated with Matisse, Rouault, and Marquet at the 1905 Salon d'Automne in Paris, it is also true that his connection with this movement did not even last five years, as his Fauvist paintings, although the most distinguished, constitute only a tiny part of his work. Thus, we can affirm, as the Céret museum does, that “no other Fauvist artist would go so far in the exaltation of line and freedom of form,” but most of his artistic career was rather distant from this artistic movement, influenced first by the rigor of Paul Cézanne's form and later by a conservative climate that manifested itself in the artistic field in the form of a “return to order,” as explained by the Céret Museum mentioned above. In addition, these changes and developments in his career led him to create a highly diverse body of work, with landscapes in vivid, expressive colors; others more realistic, with a more classical and academic technique and a more sober color palette; paintings where Cézanne's clear influence can be seen in the composition and separation of layers; works with a clear constructivist tendency; and landscapes, figures, and still lifes with a baroque air that bring us back to the Friesz retrospective with which we began our explanation. April 2018, über die Aufnahme des Gemäldes in das Werkverzeichnis, in Kopie. Die nahezu pointillistische Malweise fördert den Eindruck der Verschwommenheit in der nächtlichen Atmosphäre, die über der Ansicht liegt. Der Brückenbogen – gänzlich im Dunkel – lässt die Lichter der Fenster des gegenüberliegenden Ufers im Wasser der Seine widerspiegeln; rot leuchtende Laternen erheben sich wie Wächter auf der Pont Neuf. Das Gemälde erweist sich als Meisterwerk des Pariser Impressionismus in einer bedeutenden Epoche der französischen Malerei. Provenienz: Galerie Jacques Hamon, Le Havre, um 1950. Anmerkung: Früh durch seine Eltern in der Kunst gefördert, begann Friesz 1892 bei Charles Marie Lhuillier an der Kunstschule seiner Heimatstadt zu studieren. Mit seinen dortigen Kollegen Georges Braque und Raoul Dufy unternahm er Studienreisen und unterhielt lebenslang Freundschaft mit ihnen. In Paris studierte er bei Léon Bonnat an der École des Beaux-Arts und stand dort unter anderem in Kontakt mit Albert Marquet, Henri Matisse und Camille Pissarro. Besonders von Pissarro ließ er sich stark beeinflussen. Ab 1900 folgten zahlreiche Ausstellungen, wie etwa im Salon d'Automne oder Salon'des Indépendants, wobei sich seine Malweise zunehmend dem Fauvismus annäherte. Auch in Belgien, Portugal, München und Düsseldorf war er vertreten, nahm ferner an Ausstellungen in den USA teil, 1937 bei der Weltausstellung in Paris. Der Nationalsozialismus setzte seine Werke auf die Liste der „Entarteten Kunst“ und zerstörte 1937 sein Bild „Ideale Landschaft“ aus der Galerie Wuppertal-Elberfeld. 1959 würdigte ihn die documenta 2 in Kassel posthum mit einer Ausstellung einiger seiner Werke.
